If you dont know when to fly home.
If you fly regular you normally have to call and reconfirm your departure date.
When im going down i dont know when i will go back, so the question is, can you normally change the departure date on a normal ticket or does it need to be one of those expensive "open tickets"

depends upon availability of the flights. If the plane that you want to get on is sold out then you will not be able to return on that flight.
Long stay tickets are more expensive than short stay tickets so if you buy a cheap ticket and want to extend you might have to pay an additional fee.
And there are usually change fees unless you want to go standby but if you are extending then you will have top pay change fees as you will need to change your ticket to the day that you are now going to leave. If your original return flight flies out and you disd not change your ticket to another date at least 24 hours prior to your flight your return is now worthless.

It will depend on your ticket conditions and the attitude of the airline. Not all flexible tickets are the expensive ones - probably best to go over it with a travel agent unless you use an internet site which displays detailed ticket conditions when you book.

you should check with your airlines concerning the conditions that are imposed on your ticket.
Might be worth it to pay a little more to get more flexibility.

Get onto some of the airline web sites and have a bit of a read. Lots and lots of different conditions and fare levels.

While I know you have a habit of ignoring advice - I reckon the best thing you could do is strap on a backpack and travel round SE Asia for 6 months - lessen the focus on LOS - you're too young too lose your grip on reality.
