New airport at BKK
Came across this website, not sure when it was written.
http://www.airport-technology.com/projects/bangkok/
Important bit of information that I was not aware of is that there is a DOMESTIC terminal at the new INTERNATIONAL airport. There had been speculation that ALL domestic flights would be at the old Don Muang international airport. Transfers to Phuket should still be as smooth and convenient
It will be interesting to see what flight timetables the airlines will come up with for domestic flights.
Estimated date of opening is September 2006.
Has anybody any more info?

There was some rumblings about using the old airport for all discount carriers and letting only premium carriers into the new airport.. Of course leading to all kinds of chaos in transfers and backhanders as any airline that end up with the same airport as the bulk of the international flights will then make more connections.
Due to open in Sept.. Will be funny seeing how they squirm out of this date.. The project is only 20 some years old !!

Well if the LCC are going from the old airport, I'll be going via BKK (and Lolitas) on the way there.

Don Muang will still be used for low cost carriers (Air Asia, No care, ...) and carge.
Domestic connections with THAI will be from Suvarnabumi. Not sure about Bangkok Airways.

Or Kuala Lumpar either. Maybe Singapore and Malaysian airlines will benefit.

There was a report last week that the airport wont be ready for another 7 months, so no june opening date as planned.

A bm on another forum said he heard the date was March 07.
Although 'what he heard' is probably not accurate either, it's probable it would be closer to that date than Sep 06. T.I.T after all.
Looks really smart though, I did see some pics a long while back and it looked great. And just far enough out of the BKK traffic mayhem to get to patts just that bit quicker.

I've bought my plane tickets already for Dec 06. Thing is, I don't know where I will be landing. Also, if I do land at the new airport, I don't know what internal flights will be available from there to Phuket

I really doubt you'll be landing at the new airport.
Even if they have sorted the problems by then, they would be absolutely insane to open it prior to the peak period.

From the Bangkok Post:
Saturday, 8 April 2006: The contractor has admitted that Suvarnabhumi airport cannot open in July, as caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced, due to delays in construction and cost increases. To speed up construction, parties responsible for the project intend to divert over 40 construction contracts to fast outsourcing, without open bidding contests. The practice could lead to favours of specifications for particular contractors, a source said. All parties know that the airport cannot open this July but no one dare speak out, fearing that it could deal a blow to Mr Thaksin, who made the announcement. Many airlines had expressed concern over the delay and doubted the airport would open in July.
However, caretaker Transport Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal insisted yesterday that the airport could open in July and Don Muang airport would close at that time.
No updates on the official Suvarnabhumi airport website: http://www.suvarnabhumiairport.com/en/index.htm where grand opening is still forcasted for September 2005 !

just a rumour
when the new airport opens in july/september the airforce will take over don muang. the rumour is that certain old terminals shall be converted to major accommodation for the thai military/police/corrections service in bkk.
those of you who know the river will know the 2 major corrections housing high rises heading towards the ocean.
those valuable bits of real estate will be sold and the money invested into conversion of buildings at don muang.
just a rumour but feasible.
