could try --
BA site direct they have been posting special offers to Far East
E-bookers or Orpodo (check spelling) for flights I did find one site Airline-Network that for about £17 allowed stop overs in Bkk
For last minute bookings I think Latestays.com is hard to beat rates

As has been said before, be aware that Heathrow flights may make an extra fuel atop at the moment, though not BA\Qantas.
Also try http://www.westeasttravel.com/user/default.asp , lots of good reports about them and they do seem very cheap.

Opodo
www.opodo.com or www.opodo.co.uk
Agree Caerphilly. I have used them before. Very user friendly and will deliver tickets anywhere. Good insurance too!

Kata Beach is a good, affordable couples area. It a litlle bit more mellow, relaxing area that has some decent nightlife but isn't as busy as Patong. IMHO, Patong isn't really a couples place. It's a place to go with you buddies to drink and party it up.
If you want some really fancy hotels, Bang Tao and Surin beaches are really nice.

What time of the year do you intend going ?
Flying to Phuket you have to change at least once, and twice if you go by a mid east carrier.
Best to stick with the same airline all the way if you can. eg Singapore.thai.malaysian. Ive found this the best way,You get your boarding passes for both flights at original departure point. No Messin.
Have a good time.
Are you sure you want to take a lady WITH you

kata beach....ummmm
the choice and advice to stay in kata or patong depends on the attitude of the couple
kata despite its more protected and tranquil beach in June/July may be too quiet for an "up for it couple".
My prefer for next trip would be to accommodation around Patong to allow greater opportunity to shop/party/eat in evenings with minimal travel. get your daytime travel in to Kata or even better beaches at Nai Han during the day to chill out as a couple.
Is a hotel on the south side of Patong with a fews mins taxi ride into town the ideal couples location?
At the end of the day it an individual or couples choice as to what you want to get out of your vacation........that's why there are so many threads and good advice here

We prefer Patong
We have been to Phuket several times now and prefer Patong as our main destination. We are both in our 40's and believe that at our age and the life experience we are very open to what goes on in Phuket in the bars and enjoy the relaxed and open lifestyle of the visitors to Phuket. We dont meet many couples as from our expereince we see couples around early evening walking down Bangla Road with the guy looking engrossed with the atmosphere while the woman usually looks sheepish to disgusted and is pulling on the hand of her husband to lead him out of the place. We enjoy sitting in the bars meeting the guys holidaying and chatting to the bar girls or the bar owners. We have made several friends and love catching up with them each year. So depending on how you view the place and the lifestyle that wiollo help you decide where to stay. But we really love the energy of Patong.

Cheap flights
I know you're coming from UK, but from OZ, flights to Singapore are very cheap right now. We are coming over Emirates to Singers, then Tiger Air to Phuket. Tiger flights are cheap and can be booked via their site. $A1000 each to Singers, $A70 to Phuket....including all the taxes..we used www.webjet.com.au to check out prices.

Dont forget that Tiger are nolonger departing from T1 in Singapore. You must allow more time to get over the new Budget Terminal, its a bus ride, and you must also collect your luggage and clear immigration and customs in Singapore.
