Swedish delicacy banned
Sweden's national dish is an acquired taste, to say the least.
Some say surstromming, a fermented herring, smells like garbage left out in the sun for days.
But now the fish has been banned from several major airlines, classified along with dangerous weapons like shoe bombs and firearms.
The Baltic herring is fermented in barrels for months before being put in tin cans, where the fermentation process continues.
The decision has made many Swedes very angry indeed.
Surstromming is as Swedish as Volvo and Ikea.
Some say it is simply rotten fish, which smells like rotten fish. Others argue it is the finest of delicacies.
National symbol
But now major airlines like British Airways and Air France argue the cans are pressurised goods, and must be classified as potentially explosive.
The dish is no longer allowed on their flights, and the sale of the delicacy from Stockholm's international airport has been stopped.
That has made producers of the surstromming choke on their fermented fish, calling the airlines' decision "culturally illiterate".
It is a myth, they say, that the tinned fish can explode.
They admit, however, that a punctured tin would emit a foul smell, and that the content might spill quite forcefully, like a punctured can of beer.
But that is not enough to stop the export of a potent national symbol, the herring supporters argue.
The leader of the Swedish Surstromming Academy, an organisation promoting the dish nationally and internationally, said any airline worried about explosives and foul smells should first ban bottles of champagne and French cheese before attacking the pride of the Swedish cuisine.

Hi guys,
This is not a April 1:st joke. i read about it before I left Sweden.
I can't say that I like it and the smell are not the best. I don't eat it.
I know that my mother and a friend to her was eating it in Bangkok and their neighbour called the police and was complaining about the smell. This happen in the 70:s so it wasn't so many Sweds at that time in Bkk.
In Sweden we normally eat it in august/september.
Come to sweden than n try it or not.
Take care n see you around the 13/4.
Brgds

What makes you think it is a dyeing tradition?
I like it.. If you open it under water, wash the filees, and eat it with all the ingredience, it tastes very good.. Have more problems with some Danish cheeses...

I understand Jims disguist against this.. It can be a rather strong "smell"...
But to eat it with all that is supposed to be in, it is really nice. But the most important ingriedience is the swedish "Brännvin"....
When i was young, we stole a can of surströmming and opened it and hide it in my school... Was a stinking smell all over school that day...

They have quite a lot of fish but the main Dutch Herring one is the Niewe Harring which are the first ones of the season.. (usually expensive in the first few days like Nuovo Boujelais)..
Steamed de boned and with the 2 fillets hanging from the tail.. Eaten cold in a white softbread roll with chopped onions.. Love it but gives you breath that could strip paint.
Also rollmops picked herrings with onions in a roll !! Now those stink too..

Was talking about this with my Swedish friend last night, and he said that he had a tin brought out here for him, but when he opened the local cockroach population went absolutely crazy and mobbed him. He could not put the tin down anywhere and had to hold it to keep the buggers off it
...reminded me of The Mummy when everyone is chased by those bugs!!

for you euro BMs is this swedish delicacy similar to the one the germans eat, herrings in all sorts of things, have had roll mops the dutch delicacy.
one of our german colleagues eats this herring stuff all the time, we have banned him from the staff room at lunch time.
i think it must be a marvellous crowd control agent, dont bother with the CS gas use tins of these herrings.

all about surstromming
http://www.surstromming.se/engrossen...eng-folder.htm
You will find everything about this "delicacy" here. But you must know, surströming is a very local tradition in a part of our cost of the Baltic Sea. In my part of the Kingdom, most people never felt the awful smell nor the questionable taste.
I´ll be down in LOS in a couple of weeks. If anybody likes it, I can bring a can.
