ADSL in Phuket

I'll be staying in Phuket from May till the end of this year, that is if I can get a decent internet connection. How is the quality of ADSL connections in Phuket? Is there any difference between providers? Any info you might have on this subject is highly appreciated. Thanks.

I think it depends on where on Phuket you want to stay.

In Patong it's not easy to find Internet with a real good connection, best one I know of is Liontchai.

If you stay away from Patong you will find better connection, f.ex. in Chalong, in Big A Resort for example they have good WiFi connection available.

I assume that you'll be renting something and not staying in a hotel. There has been alot of previous discussions about ADSL/internet on the island, have alook through the "expat" forum.

Having said that, one of the main problems is ensuring that the place you decide on actually has a telephone line installed, as there is a shortage of numbers in some parts of the island.

Internet is a very hit and miss deal on the island, some guys get good response while others get pretty bad.

Tearing my hair out currently.. They broke my line 10 days ago last Sunday and still cant get it fixed (they have spent days trying).. The poor line quality leads to poor internet quality and it is a frustration.. IT City this is not.

Dozens of internet shops all over Patong. Most 1baht a minute ADSL. Liontchai shops (3 of them) you can have an account and get 20 hours for 800baht.

Thanks for the response guys. I think I'll go for 2 connections, ADSL and satellite, hoping that at least one of them will be working.

And then when it rains you loose the satellite signal, and sometimes the landline as well.

At some stage you stop being surprised that things stop working and just learn to sigh and go grab a beer and check it later.. Of course if you have scedules and a business it plays hell with commitments..

Such is life living in a developing country.

If you need reliable connection, have two phone lines, one from TT&T and one from TOT. I have seen many internet cafes work in that way for backup.

TT&T have been stable for me for months now. (At home, in MTB it looks like it has been down a few times recently as the webcam didnt work)

Is it possible for a non-resident to sign up for the telephone line or does the owner of the house have to do that? Anyway, great suggestion.

It has to be a Thai (with Thai ID and tabian baan), foreigner with a passport/work permit or company name.

...or like me, just keep paying the previous tenants bill (if poss). My landlord has all the utilities bills in their name and i just pay them when they turn up. Think the only bill I have of my own is cable tv

Had TOT install ADSL last week. Connection is sh@te It appears to be running HALF the speed of dial up! Does where you are in Patong affect it?

I'm having to spend far too much time still in the internet shops

yes line quality does effect it but that is usally in burst.. bad line drops out and you have very poor connection..

My TOT was flying (>800k real international measured) last time when the line was working.. With luck I should have a new line waiting for me when I return.. Not taking bets though..
