Royal Brunei

I travelled with Royal Brunei to Europe a couple of years ago. They are very efficient, the staff are friendly and helpfull. they draw flight staff from all over Asia making the airline very multilingual. The only drawback is they don't serve alcohol, however they will let you consume your duty frees so long as you are orderly about it. Given that they are usually the cheapest airline to travel with this compensates for the booze somewhat.

The partner and I stayed overnight in Brunei and had an enjoyable stay. Again, the place is empty of booze as per their culture but for a day or so it's worth a look. Very orderly and safe, next to no crime, quite clean. They run tours and adventure tours through the waterways, jungle and so forth.

Layover time at the airport can be boring, there is not a lot there and of course it is "dry"

Currently there is a deal running through Flight Centre whereby ex Perth you can get to Bangkok on RBA for about AU$750.00. Flights on Thai, Qantas, SIA etc are considerably more.

thanks stevem was looking for that link.
quite strange 4 star but the comments arent that great.
thinking going bangkok first and getting "bangkok air" flights internally.
guess i might be better off with singapore or malaysian (KL stopover) travelled both and have been impressed with each airline for a few hundred dollars may be better off with them.
just looking for stopover somewhere different (maybe cathay via HK)

No booze it's a dry country, not even in the hotels.

There is a small percentage of the population that is non Muslim, 5-10%mainly Christians who mostly work in tourism. From what I understand, they drive to the Malay border, which isn't far, cross over and immediately on the other side are outlets that sell liquor. They then bring it back in to Brunei and drink it in the privacy of their own home.

cliff,
when you say stopover do you mean stay overnight or just in airport? cathay is an unbelievable airlien, best i have ever flown. as far as HK, staying over for 1 night might not be ideal because airport is pretty far from city and expensive

The Malaysian Airlines girls used to hang out at a nightclub in PJ called DV8, if your in KL would be in your interest to check it out. A bit of cab ride from the city, but worth it. Also for a bit of a bar crawl, get a cab out to Bangsar. A big expat area with loads of decent bars.
