The odds are if you with the same airline going on the same day then you just transfer to the new plane and the bags get transferd as well.

When i went to LOS last September i went with Austrian airline (star alliance)

Heathrow - Vienna - Bangkok and vice versa with no problems and only needed to clear customs at the end and start of the journey.

If you are changing airlines then odds are you will have to clear customs.

When your tickets are from the same group, like Star Alliance, it is no problem and you can check your baggage thru everywhere. Getting all the boarding cards at the first checkin may be a problem. For example I could not get the boarding card for my Lufthansa commuter flight in Germany, when i checked in in Chiang Mai, but could get my baggage checked thru easily.

On the other hand, I think there are some restrictions after 9/11, when they cannot be sure, that you will take the same plane as your baggage. Normally, when you are not boarding, your baggage will be unloaded, this takes some time, will delay the flight and is not for free for the airline.

FYI
I've just done HKT(Thai)-BKK-KUL(Malysian)-LHR(Malaysian)
Checked the luggage all the way from Phuket to London no problem but I had to check-in again at BKK and clear customs there.
Glad I didn't have my suitcase, it's a hell of a walk from Domestic to T1.

Sorry, forgot to put what is probably an important point. They were on 2 seperate tickets( HKT-BKK on one with TG and then BKK-KUL-LHR with MH on the second). When I asked if I could clear customs at HKT she said "not with Malaysia" rather than "not on 2 tickets" but I didn't want to push it.
