800 baht a day gets a rough jeep.. If your talking daily anyway.. 7 days might swing it but more normal for a well maintained one is >1k and I dont think you see many auto's for the big jeeps.
Though it is low season now so maybe you will get lucky.

You should get an auto scooter like a Mio for 1000 for a week. Don't pay more. Just walk away...there'll be heaps more available in another 50 yards!

If you stay in Kamala try VIA
http://www.via-phuket.com/
I would avoid crappy jeeps though. For a week, in the low season, you should be able to get a decent auto for around 1K per day.

I did some reading and from what I found - insurance in Thailand isn't worth the paper it's written on, especially if your a farang. The best insurance is to drive slow and let the crazies over take you.

Insurance is worth something if you use a reputable company, not the beach boys, Budget Rent a Car and the other established ones you are covered properly. Take your chances with the beach guys, I have had a punch up with one of them in the past over a wheel arch they claimed i bent, when i spoke back to them in Thai and refused, one of them took a swing at me.

Depends who you are renting from, if Budget or reputable company they fill in the sheet that says there's damage already etc, I wouldnt bother at all with the beach folks in terms of renting to tell the truth.

Budget do Auto things, but the more traditional vehicles. Parking is a pain in the butt in Patong as well as most of the Island, last time I rented a jeep for my entire stay, hardly drove it that much, but nice to have the option.
That time the hotel i was in had parking
