Ways to get to Phuket

Have anyone else travelled to Phuket recently via means other than flying.

What means did you travel by?

How much did it cost?

How long did it take?

Would you recommend?

Also what sites are there?

Bit of an abrubt post but too hot to have a dig :-) - Bus 17 hrs or so or Train, both a total nightmare.

Well, you dont have a lot of options,

1) Bus, if your into fear factor type of stuff. But why subject yourself to 12 hours of this.

2) Train, a long journey as you have to bus it from Surat Thani.

3) Drive yourself. Difficulty in getting one way rentals, make sure you are fully covered insurance wise.

4) Fly, preferred option.

A style similar to mine

When I first went to LOS, I got the train up to Chiang Mai from BKK. This was in 1993 (IIRC).

Then I decided to go to Phuket. I got a bus down from Chiang Mai (8-10 hrs) to BKK and ended up in a bys station. I asked if there was a hotel close by and mentioned I wanted to go to Phuket the next day. ''Bus go now'' she shrieked and sold me a ticket and a porter ushered me to the bus. I was the only paleface on the bus. The mossies and several other insects soon realised this and by the morning (overnight journey) I bitten to 'ell.

We stopped off by some ferry where all the Thais got off and went to Koh Samui (I think). I then transferred to a minibus and completed the journey to Phuket.

I thoroughly recommend internal flights even if you do get delayed for an hour or so, it's better than a 12 hour bus journey.

not really.

I am with Stevem here as you could have meant from London or a whole bunch of other cities in Europe.

Be more specific if you want a specific answer.

The less info you post in your question, the less responses you will get as people will just ignore your question if they can't tell what you are talking about.

I think that Thailearner was responding to Swishtz regarding his comment of being abrupt in his style of writing, not Steve's suggestion for more info.

I took a taxi once but Phuket-Bangkok, not the other way. It took nine hours (and several years off my life) and cost 10k baht.

May I ask why? Were the flights full or did you have a TG with you who did not like flying?

Some farangs drove a tuktuk from Thailand to Europe. So logically it must be possible to make the returntrip with a tuktuk to Thailand. Wonder how much it will cost.

Has anyone rented a car from Bangkok to go to Phuket??

How many hours is the drive by car?? I rented a car in Costa Rica (just got a speeding ticket, paid off the cop) on my last vacation and had no problems.

Of course when I stay in Bangkok or Pattaya I wont need a Rental. But if I go to Phuket is it worth getting a rental for like 4-5 days??

In all honesty your probably better of getting a flight with Thai air... Bangkok airways.. Nok air... Or maybe even if you really have to Air Asia from Bangkok to Phuket And renting a car when you get into Phuket.... Driving will take you far to long and a waste of time..... Nok air is probably your cheapest option but you will need to watch the weight restrictions i think from reading its 15kg baggage allowence but its probably the cheapest option... Will take about 1hr 40 mins approx by air as opposed to god knows how long by car.... Then get a car in Phuket to rent if you need one.... To be honest the flight with Nok air might even work out cheaper for a return than renting a car from Bangkok

www.nokair.com

hope this helps

In my mind, the only reason anyone would even consider driving Bangkok to Phuket would be to stop on the way. If its just a means of getting there, it would be crazy with the price of air tickets these days.
