Cabin Baggage policy
Got this from one of the travel sites I use.
Quote:
Re: Cabin Baggage Policy
In accordance with the International Aviation Transport Association’s cabin baggage standards, all airlines on long haul routes will announce implementation of cabin bag size with effect from August 1, 2006 on all flights from Heathrow on long haul destinations
Individual dimensions of cabin baggage size for all classes of travel – Premium and Economy - should not exceed 22 inches (56 cms) in length, 18 inches (45 cms) in width, and 10 inches (25cms) in depth. Any bag exceeding the stipulated dimensions will not be allowed through the Central Search area at London Heathrow on and after August 1, 2006.
These changes will bring airlines policy in line with the UK department for Transport recommendations and the requirements of British Airports Authority.
Note:If you are uncertain of baggage restrictions, then it is your responsibility to check this with the airline you are flying with before travel. This letter is for guideline purposes only, as this policy will vary between different airlines slightly.

This applies for Heathrow , don't know about other UK airports.

probably going to happen to all international airlines and even domestic airlines as they are downsizing baggage limitations in weight and size. Just go up on the airlines websites and see what they post for luggage limitations.
Already happened in the US.

Flying Aberdeen-Dublin and Dublin-Knock last week had the same restrictions...There was numerous "Bag Size Checkers" in the airports for you to test your bags.

Good to know.
I suppose small backpacks won't be affected as they are usually less than 22 inches long. May have to get the measuring tape out though...
This new rule may cause delays though? As people that normally have larger hand-luggage will have to go back to check in the hand-luggage again... (if not informed at initial check-in).

When we travelled there were some baskets at the check in desks, they asked you to put your bag in the basket to see if it fits if the bag looked border line.

Just a word of warning.
On my last trip with TG. in June my cabin bag was taken from me at the boarding lounge as it was oversize. ( i've used the same bag on previous trips with no problems.)
When i picked up my bag on arrival in Phuket all the zips were undone and several items were missing.
This time i'll be following the bag size rules.

And about time too in my opinion.
Not sure about this rule causing delays it should save a lot of time, there's nothing worse that trying to get to your seat and people are cramming bags and cases into the lockers, I wonder sometimes what the hell people carry with them on flights.

Not weight: BA have removed the weight restrictions on cabin bagage so long as you can lift it and it fits in their baggage sizers:
http://www.phuket-info.com/forums/ac...ge-policy.html
and
http://www.phuket-info.com/forums/ac...h-checkin.html
Transatlantic checked baggage allowances have always been much higher than other long and short haul flights (32kg vs 20kg) but the cabin weight limits were similar (1 piece < 7kg)
According to the TG website the weight limit, for their flights, remains at 7kg - so I supppose I will be wearing my coat of many pockets and belt pouches as usual. They say the same size limitations will be imposed (by BAA) as in the OP - however as a civilized nation they give the metric measurements first followed (unnecessarily) by the barbarian units in brackets.
As to the question of what people carry-on... the legitimate answer is anything they don't want stolen from the checked baggage or smashed by luggage handlers - laptops, cameras, scuba regulators, fragile souvenirs. I'm not saying that's all the crap they carry-on, usual disclaimers apply w.r.t. run of the mill idiots.

As you are having a rant, here's mine. What is it with these morons who,as soon as the plane has landed and is taxiing to the apron, jump out of their seats, mobile phone pressed to their ear and start to get out the hand luggage I love it when the stewardesses give them a bollocking.

Went to Honk Kong once. As soon as we hit the tarmac, all (and I mean all) the HK Chinese were out of their seats. Visitors to HK were shouting at them to sit down and the cabin crew just shrugged their shoulders - they had seen it all before.

I would say about time too. We must all have been stuck behind some cretin who clearly believes that baggage allowances are for other people.

If these new restrictions...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4778615.stm?ls
... persist to my next tour, I shall be taking a Eurostar/short-haul flight to a TG departure hub in a nearby sane country i.e. one that isn't trying to rabbit punch above its weight
No way am I trusting my new Fujitsu tablet - specifically purchased for travel use - to Thai or, for that matter UK, baggage rustlers er... I mean handlers.
I have seen no mention of attempts to beef-up security OF BAGGAGE e.g. that wrapping system they have at Phuket.
