Problem is airlines only insure your checked in luggage for a minimal amount.. Lost bags once full of nice clothes and I got about 180 USD from an airline.. Cost me well over a grand in just jeans shirts etc.. hell the samsonite suitcase was 2x the money I got for all of it..
Factor in you often carry a laptop.. PDA.. Cell.. Camera equip.. Ipod.. Etc.. there can be well over 3k worth of electronics easily (and thats without the dispution to a business traveller of losing data and contacts which if meetings are crucial could be many multiples that in lost business or a ruined trip and replacement time).. So I get 20 USD per kilo or some other pittance if they lose it !!! No thanks, think I will carry that myself and make sure it stays with me.
Thats IMHO what leads to a wheelie carry on + laptop bag + manbag for tickets.. If its not for carrying electronics I really only have ticket wallets and a v small carry on for book / etc..
|
Agree. If they can assure me that all checked in luggage will arrive in good condition, AT THE SAME TIME as 1 out of 5 I arrive without luggage due to Thai airlines delays (once even 2 hours) and not sufficient time to transit in Frankfurt, without dammage or pilferage, I will put my laptop, camera, PDA and whatsoever in the checked-in in luggage.
But, I use a small inflatable pillow, ear tabs and a mask before my eyes to sleep on long flights. Will I be allowed to take that with me on the plane? And what about a book. Or do I have to sit there in my chair annoying myself.
And what about a pen to do some crosswords and fill in your immigration papers (or do they expect 300 passengers to do that in the transit zone before passing immigration)?
And last but not least, I am going to LOS in November (again). Comming back in December. I have to change planes in Frankfurt and pick up my luggage in Brussels. How about winter clothes? Or am I to walk in polo or whatever in freezing temperatures?

My last post here was deleted by the mods. I proposed a very simple solution which would not restrict anyone's ability to travel, and would allow us all to return to relatively normal prodecures for check-in, boarding, carry-ons, etc.
But you can't even say anything that is not PC these days without getting it deleted!
OTOH, maybe I should thank the mods, since now I don't have to worry about them issuing a fatwah on my fat ass!

all these extra security measures cost them millions

I'm thinking that a naked airline would be the best solution. Everyone boards without clothing. Security screening would be a snap.....
What about the liquid in breast implants? A would be terrorist could load up her titties with explosive, plug in a timex and blow up the plane?

So, I'm back Home from the Airport now. I checked my 13.25 flight to Amsterdam online this morning and it looked okay. I arrived at 11.00 a.m at Heathrow and it all went from bad to worse, I left at 17.00, driving back home. The next flight they wanted to book us on was not leaving before 20.00 p.m, and that was not even for sure. When I left, there were hundreds & hundreds of ppl outside Terminal 4, completly stranded.
Well, I guess I mostlikly spend another weekend behind my pc instead of meeting my family.
Oh yeah, there were a couple of American's in those long queues who found it all very chaotic and unacceptable - which they loud mouthy had to let to know everyone else. I just turned around and told them that I will request my refund for this lost ticket at the "White House", they were thinking for a minute what I was on about, but at least it was quite for a moment.
EDITED: Offense Disclaimer: Not that I blame it on the US alone, but they play their part and we all have to be patient.

Hi Paul,
Fuel surcharges to Palau in Micronesia used to be $68 per person. Now they are $208.
Taxes to Fiji used to be $48. Now they are $220.
Taxes to Thailand used to be $58. Now they are $233.
On a plane that carries 300 people minimum that is at least an additional $42,000 going to the airline just for passengers. Air Cargo Rates have skyrocketed also.
Trust me, the airlines are making consumers pay for any expenses that they are accruing. These surcharges go to pay for the higher cost of fuel and the increased cost of security.
I am sure that I could find out how much fuel a large jet consumes to fly out to Thailand, Fiji, and Micronesia and what the price increase is for jet fuel over the last few years but I don't need to to see that they have to be making some money off of the surcharges.

Your previous post was rightly deleted for being very offensive. It most certainly wasn't humerous and in the light of what is happening in Bangla Rd with bomb squads being on alert,it was a stupid misjudgement to post at all.
Marc26 was wrong about Johndon posting the two most stupid posts here.
Yours was far worse.
I think you would find all the mods, and Nicke would have removed it.

Do I detect a slight difference of opinion?
BTW, it was only meant half-humorously. In fact, it was more than half serious. Who was responsible for 9/11? Who was responsible for the Bali bombings? Who was responsible for the Madrid bombings? Who was responsible for the London subway bombings? Who is responsible for trying to blow up 10 airplanes in the plot just thwarted(Thank you, British intelligence. Brilliant! Glad to see someone is doing their job well!)? And who are the ones proudly declaring that there is plenty more of this madness in store for us?
Really, a 7 year-old child can see what is going on! And could easily find a better solution than what we now have to endure.
So why can't the leaders of the most powerful nations on earth do as well as a 7 year-old child? One reason, and one only. Political correctness!

Here you go eveybody.
Direct from Continental Airlines Headquarters.
Current as of Thu., Aug. 10, 2006 5:00 a.m. Central. Information is updated as it is received.
For all flights to, from, and within the United States
The Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security has determined that there is a high risk of terrorism against U.S. civil aviation, and the need for extra restrictions to assure the security of air travel.
On instruction from the Transportation Security Administration, Continental Airlines advises customers that no liquids or gels are permitted inside the sterile area through the screening checkpoint or be in accessible baggage or on one's person except:
Baby formula, breast milk, or juice if a baby of small child is traveling
Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket
Insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines
In addition, customers may not bring liquids and gels purchased inside the sterile area onboard the aircraft. Examples of liquids and gels include beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel and items of a similar consistency.
These measures apply to all scheduled and charter flight operations that depart from and operate within the United States and its territories and possessions.
All passengers are advised to travel light. Accessible property should have minimal clutter to expedite the screening process.
Passengers should check-in as normal, but should expect longer processing times at the airport.
Continental Airlines regrets any inconveniences caused.
For all flights departing from the United Kingdom
Continental Airlines advises passengers that no items of hand baggage can be carried on board any aircraft departing any UK airport. The UK Government has advised that this instruction will apply to all airlines operating from UK airports.
Passengers may only take through the airport security search point, the following items in a single (ideally transparent) plastic bag:
Travel documents essential for the journey (eg passports, tickets and visas)
Pocket sized wallets and pocked sized purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards and identity cards). Handbags are not permitted.
Prescribed medicines essential for the duration of the flight, except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
Spectacles and sunglasses, without cases.
Contact lenses, without bottles of solution
For those traveling with an infant: baby food, milk and sanitary items essential for the flight.
Keys (but no electrical key fobs).
Every other item must be carried in customer’s checked luggage.
No electrical or battery powered items including laptops, mobile phones, ipods, remote controls etc can be carried in the cabin and must be checked as baggage.
Passengers are advised to check-in as normal but to expect delays at all UK airports.
Continental Airlines regrets any inconvenience caused.
Continental Airlines will not accept for travel any customers not complying with this Government instruction.

Just in case you forgot, 9/11 happened before the US and Great Britain went into Iraq the second time.
And remember that if it wasn't for the US and Great Britain your country would be part of Germany.
Putz.

This is the kind of stupid, ill informed opinion that the extremists thrive on. Maybe you should watch the news and you'll realize that with or without Bush, terrorism exists.
Honestly, I don't think Bush or Blair give a shit one way or another if you're inconvenienced by the added security, neither do I. Best you stay home in your momma's basement and masterbate.
