whats the score with taxis?

hi all,

a quick taxi question:

are phuket cabs much the same as in bkk. what i mean is.. must u insist the meter is turned on before every journey begins to save from getting ripped off? And do u need to tell the driver to ONLY take you to your destination and NOT to his borthers/sisters/fathers/friends shop on the way?

Only Phuket Town has taxi meters. Also some at the airport. On all beaches like Patong, Karon, Kamala taxis without meter, you make an agreement about the price with the driver.

I reckon transport is a pain in the but... at the beaches and pricey too, with the exception of motorbike taxis on which u can pillion (but pay double) at 20 baht anywhere around Patong (no helmet required).But the rest is tuk tuks and the drivers have a monoply thing going and charge double or more what a BKK taxi would.To go over the hill (10 mins) to the next beach south called Karon they want 3oo THB ! and 15 mins to Lam Sing or Surin beaches 400. Compare this to my record 178 THB from the airport to MBK area in BKK (+ 50 baht tip and I pay the 60 baht tolls and 40 mins) in aircon new car and its comparitivly exey. The cars from the airport are better at 500 for 40 mins or the day hire deal by FLs at 5-600 baht are a bargain> never found them try to take you shopping if you said u werent a shopper... Atuk tuk driver charged my mum 100 for a 1 minute drve and laughed happily when I suggested it was not polite ...TUK TUK's... MAI CHOB!!
