I am leaving next week flying from Sydney to Bangkok and transfer for a flight to Phuket (Thai Airways straight thru), but I only have 1 hour 30 mins between flights. What are my chances of making the connection?

To transfer from international to domestic or vice versa takes about 30 minutes to walk from say “E”(international gates) to “C” (Domestic Gates) Found it much faster from international to domestic on the arrivals level as there are many more moving sidewalks and fewer stores. On the departure level it’s mainly retail with very few moving sidewalks and lots more foot traffic to navigate and then you have to go through security again when you reach your alphanumeric gate. I would say 45 minutes to an hour between connection time is comfortable. For those that need to have a Cigarette break…..All smoking rooms (very few actually) are all located on the arrivals level.
If your flying in international with your bags check through to say Phuket you will clear customs in Phuket and will be given a little sticker to separate you on arrival. This was very quick, in my case as I think from landing, customs, pickup bags; custom bag search to the car waiting for me took 15 minutes.

19th Oct - Flew TG HKT-BKK-MAN
Arrived HKT 90 mins before departure - virtually empty and no-problems getting checked in and seating as I prefer.
Arrive new airport - I'd expected at last that to get a proper gate and skyway but NO - same old crap as Don Muang with bus transfer to arrival gate. No separation of CQ sticker anymore - all on same bus and to the terminal - about 10 mins. Inside the bleak Orwellian terminal no problems finding the transfer to international - even friendly immegration official sitting lonely there to direct passengers.
Up on level 4 - plenty of food, shops etc but not much seating - so went back to level 3 to find some quiet seating .. was tempted to kip in the Muslim Prayer Room as no-one there and everywhere else looked like a building site - half finished airline lounges and little signage.
Wandered around a little - and observed the leaking roof - dirt stained glass and wondered how long the lifespan for this place would be - seems will require lots of maintainence - but give them credit the shear space and openess was refreshing.
Back up to level 4 - ate - BK (safe choice and good) - no problem finding toilets - although on Channel News Asia yesterday saw only 100 toilets for 100K users ... and $10m budgeted to install 200 extra toilets in next 2 months.
Not the airports fault - but TG aircraft for BKK-MAN has a fault - not very good info given - wait wait wait and aircon not very good at this gate... so 80 mins late we get told to board ... but NO ... we get on a bus and taken to replacement aircraft! (Well better to get there than engine drop off - still never told what was actually wrong with the first plane).
Arrived MAN - luggage arrived ok -phew....
I'd give current situation 4/10 - not been through immigration in BKK - I'd say main improvements needed are signage, general cleaning of the airport, and no more bus rides - really hate having to bus it to a terminal after a flight.

Hi Guy's,
Just a note on the Duty free and if transfering to a domestic flight.
If your in transit, not a problem.
If say coming from Sydney and then clearing customs to board a domestic flight, you can't take your grog...you'll have to pack it in the checked bags.
This happened to me on my last vist (18th Sept), bought grog at Sydney..flew to Bangkok. Cleared Customs, and then wen't to Domestic to go to Khon Kaen. Was told that I can't take Grog on board, and so had to carefully pack it up in my checked bags. Lucky that when we got our bag's...all was still in tact.

Heard from my pilot mate just back from Bangkok last night, that the taxiways and aprons are starting to crack and buckle already. Story he heard is that cheap asphalt was used and that the underlayers are starting to get water logged.

Looks like this has been in the news before.
On airportthai.co.th there is a description of cracks in the runway, see chapter 6:
Suvarnabhumi Airport l FAQs
Also Bangkok had a report that was retracted and may be facing libel suit:
AsiaMedia :: THAILAND: 'Post' faces criminal libel suit for airport runway crack report
There are a lot of similar reports to be found on the net, however, it appears that most of them dates back to mid 2005. So, is this something new or the same old story?

This is a joke .... so arrive from Manila to the gate (A5) and off the skyway we go ... and yes straight down the stairs again for a 10 min bus journey round the whole ternimal (A5 is domestic - just where I wanted to be - well B6 was gate to HKT) ... do they do this just to show off the building?? As this flight originates in Osaka - certainly was not impressing the Japanese.
The transit signs are ridiculous - you get arrows pointing in opposite directions -- WTF -- still staff helpful enough and if you are looking to connect directly to HKT (or other final immigration point. Chaing Mai etc) then from bus drop - go down corridors to main terminal then keep heading left (2 travelators) then the Inetrnational to Phuket/Chaing Mai etc is currently a sign hidden to the left of the International flight departure board (which these flights ARE NOT listed on). Once finding this no problem - through screening and too the gate.... and one once actually used the skyway to the plane ... hooray!!
The flight down had a lot of farang women and couples on board as well as a large group of airline personal seeming to heading for some conference here - still flight was nearly full so good sign for the comming high season.

Well can only go on what he told me, he is a 747 captain so doesnt BS too much, well sometimes. He says there are areas where it is very visible. On a walkaround he was talking to some Thai engineers who told him about the under layer water logging.
I guess time will tell

If its true, that is dreadful work on the part of the contractors responsible.I wonder if repairs can be made without disrupting the flight schedules??

New Airport - Non TG
I'm landing on 22/12 on Gulf Air heading to Phuket.
I'll clear C&I in Bangkok.
The question is do I need to check in for TG Domestic to Phuket on Level 4 or do I have to go to Level 2?
In answer to smoking question, I did a quick BKK turnaround and they have a nice smoking room at the entrance to concourse E (Level 4) next to the Bar.
There's also some fast food places and a sports bar near the entrance to concourse F.
I'm never there long enough on arrival so I couldn't tell you what the craic is!

found that immigration in the new airport was very slick and fast.only thing that peeed me off is that you can not even get a cup of coffee even less a beer once you go to domestic departures.

Just a quick question.
I take it that there is cafes and a few facilities in the transit area for a flight down to Phuket? And the staff are now different from the old airport.

You can get beer in the restuarant, it is the only place I found and check out the price. Heinkien 160 Bt a (small) bottle or you could go mad and have a Corona for 300 Bt.

There is definately a large food area in domestic , but it is "behind" the shops and not well signposted.

The only neg was when you enter the restaurant you have to buy a card for either 300,500.700 or 1000 baht, you buy stuff with it and when you leave any unspent amount is given back to you, couldn't see the point of it.
