domestic flight booking?

Where is the best place to book a flight from BKK - PHKT - BKK over december.
Locally I would end up paying $150 and I've been advised that any thai local airlines would be much cheaper.

What do most people use?

do i need to book in advance or will I be ok booking it once in bangkok. We only stay in bkk for 3 nights though before flying to phuket.

Thanks

I would say that it depends on when in December you are looking at , the nearer to Christmas you get , the more chance of some flights being fully booked. Thai is the most expensive airline, but also has most flights and is pretty reliable , "low costs" airlines are becoming very popular but this also means availability may be less.

If you have 3 nights in Bangkok you will at least have a bit of flexibility about which flight you take . Personally , because I fly in from the U.K , I usually book with Thai ( got stuck in Bangkok once for almost 24 hours trying to get on a flight on the Queen's Birthday ) , so now would rather have "confirmed" flight when I arrive.

I have only flown internally in Thailand once and i used Thai and to be honest you can do it cheaper but i would always use Thai. No problems at all. More expensive but worth it.

thanks for the links.

Ftowers...thanks for the advice. Checked out airasia site...working out at BT3500 leaving bkk on 28/12/06 and returning on 04/01/07.
is this a good rate?

If i book this online, is it a confirmed booking or do they have overbooking and then i get told that the flight is full and they bump me off the flight??

I dont mind paying slightly more if thai is not that far expensive but if asia air can give me a confirmed booking and there are no problems after that then I'd rather go with the cheaper option.

do the domestic flights have regular delays??

All airlines overbook flights even the majors. How safe will your "confirmed' booking be, who really knows!!!!

Of course they do, especially the low cost carriers. Have a read around this forum for previous comments on Air Asia.

If your time constrained and have to be somewhere on time, then dont use low cost carriers, you could be very disappointed.

We arrive 28th October early in the morning. Stay 3 days BKK. First day we go to traveloffice (Soi 7) and book our flight on31th. Always with Thai as they are more flexibel in changing flights because of more flights a day, so not getting stuck somewhere to long.

I'm a fan of Bangkok Airways too. Better prices than Thai Air,but nowhere near as many flights daily. Just as good airline as Thai IMO.

Using Air Asia for the first time next trip, 2995baht return inc all taxes opposed to 6600 baht with Thai air. I just pray my return trip isn't delayed so I get my connection.

I have used Bangkok Airways a few times also, never had problems with them, good planes, good timing, and nice lounges with free internet, coffee, and alot more
