Laptop in the Room w/ no Safety Box
What are the chances that my laptop would get jacked if I leave it in the room, not openly, but hidden somewhere in a guesthouse room w/ no saftey box?

Hey PosK
Anything is possible in LOS
I would suggest you go and buy a small padlock so you can put your laptop in your suitcase and lock it with the padlock. This is what I do and I haven’t had any problems so far.......
Funny story: I was staying at the Holiday Inn BKK a few weeks ago and as I often do I left a few baht in my room on the table, maybe 10 baht in total. When I got back to my room later that day the 10 baht was gone. I suspected the maid ripped it off so the next day I left another 10 bath just to be sure I hadn’t misplaced the first lot.
When I returned to my room this lot was also missing. I questioned the maid about my missing baht and eventhough she looked very guilty she denied taking the money. Stupid woman was risking her job for 10 baht. Even in a 4 to 5 star hotel things can easily go missing.

Same same as oasis.. Travel with a hardcase and lock the hardcase perhaps even locking its handle to something solid..
I thought coins left on a counter were considered maid tips.. Not joking, I thought that was 'standard practice' for tipping rooms staff.. Leave coins for the cleaning ladies.

The "standard practice" is to leave the tip on top of the pillow. However, if you leave nothing on the pillow, but leave 10 Baht next to the bed, what's a girl to think? IMHO, she was giving you the benefit of a doubt, rather than assuming you were being a complete cheapskate.

I just dump my coinage on the counter.. If its a coin heavy country (pounds or Euros) I would maybe keep my change but for 3rd world coinage its just used for maid tips when in hotels..

Funny about leaving the coins on the table, last trip I left all my coins on there just to get them out of my pocket if anything. The maids wouldn't touch them even when I forgot to leave tip and come check out time I had like 40 odd baht in 1s, anyway I put them in one of those small plastic bags and left them in the room. Downstairs at reception have just finished checking out the security guy comes down says "mister!" and hands me the bag

How can you get a serious answer to this post? No mention of the guesthouse or even a clue to its location. I suppose we can assume the poster is coming to Thailand and assume maybe Patong??? Why would it be any different to what you would do with your laptop here to anywhere else in the world?
Whenever and whereever in the world I have been with a laptop, I have always just popped it back in its carrycase when not in use and have never had anything happen to it. From my experience the majority of hotel cleaning staff etc are very honest, well at least as honest as any other occupation in the service industry. A complaint about something stolen from a room is easy to trace back to a potential suspect and unlike western countries over here there is no unions or unfair dismissal, one too many complaints and they would be sacked, it is too much of a potential loss of trade to the hotel owner.
Okay that one time could be the loss of your stuff but the statistical chance from my own extensive travelling is less than getting mugged on the way to the hotel.

I have never heard of this before but I have at times given the maid a nice tip early into my stay. I find that this works a treat as you are given special service for things like getting an iron and ironing board etc.
BTW I wasn't to concerned about the 20odd baht, nor did I dob her into management.

Most of the safety boxes I have seen in the hotels, you would have a problem getting a laptop into.
Keep it out of sight, remove the temptation.

Probably the same chance as in anyother country when you leave valuables in the open in your room.

Me too Sef, I always do that. Most of the times they never touch it though but I add to it every day and leave it on checkout.
On the issue of laptop in room, I always leave it i the room and nothing has so far happened
Only time I've ever had something nicked was at Wall Street Inn and that was just a small amount of money..Laptop, camera and phone was still there...

I used to do the same (i.e. let the loose change build up in an empty glass), but after a couple of trips I realized that the entire stay's worth of tips might be going to only one maid who cleaned up my room at checkout and only a fraction of the days I was there (i.e. the maids were shifting the rooms they cleaned based on when people got up to spread the work out). A typical three week stay could build up to roughly 1000 bt because I never pay for things with coins.
Remedied this by telling the manager to tell the staff to take the coins in the glass each morning. This will work at a smaller type hotel, but for a larger one, it's probably best to leave something each day on the bed (as Jaybee noted), or hand something directly to them...
Regarding laptop in room. I've never had a problem keeping mine linked up and on at all times, but this was probably not a good idea in hindsight. As others have already noted, probably best to at least attempt to hide it and put it in the suitcase whether locked or not.

was set straight by TG last tour - leave tip for maids on the bed, otherwise coins left for them on dining table always remained untouched.
Likewise with camera, mobile and laptop, never had a problem. I do lock-up passport, cc, large cash etc. Have stayed in the same place a number of times and found the staff to be scrupulously honest

I leave 60-100baht a day UNDER the pillow....I would then have some coinage that builds up on the side but this remains untouched....
I would be wary of leaving valuables in the room....If you have to leave somthing, lock it away in your case with a good padlock....

I've also never had a problem travelling all over Thailand with my laptop, locking it in a safe if possible, or the suitcase if not.
However, it's worth noting that maids make only 5,000 to 7,000 baht per month even in five-star resorts. That mean's my laptop equals one year off for some disgruntled staff member.

I can't understand this fascination some people have with taking their laptops with them everywhere they go.
Why do you need to take your laptop to Patong ??
I may be missing something here, but why take it when you are on holiday ? I can understand if you are on a business trip, but would you really be staying in a guesthouse without a safety box if that was the case ??
I suggest you leave it at home and take a break from it !! Press some buttons on the local ladies instead !!

1. Watch DVDs in room.
2. Listen to music in room.
2. Download pictures when digital camera is full and/or full of incriminating photos.
3. Use internet banking without having passwords stolen by keystroke loggers at the internet cafe.
4. Use keystroke loggers to get the password of TGf. (Joke, we all know its either 1234... or qwert....!)
Just a few of my reasons.
