Short haul sure no/little impact, but long haul can have some impact. But your right, if they save 4000kgs somewhere, they'll just load more freight.

yeah I wasn't being totally serious, but what if a whole flight of 100kg+ people turned up at checkin???
Come to think of it, wasn't there something in the states about charging overweight people for two seats?? sounds about right to me.

Me and My Luggage
I agree. I think they should weigh me and my luggage. I am a svelt fit handsome man!
I flew from Barbados next to a huge woman carrying a tree... For four hours I was gradually squashed into my seat as her **** expanded over me.. Then I went to the toilet. When I came back.. her **** had fully occupied my seat and I could not sit down.
The air crew were sympathetic and I was moved.

I believe the definition of a Ticket was redefined years ago from "a ride" (don't know the actual definition) to a "seat". That means that is you are so large that one seat is not enough, that they can charge you for another. Whether it is practiced or not I don't know.

I always though, and perhaps I was wrong then, that a cargo plane is carrying loads, like double or more weight, than a passenger plane, if it is the same type of plane like 747 - 400, isn't a passenger plane always going to be under its maximum take of weight ? I know some airlines operate Combi flights but wouldn't they always weigh less than a cargo flight thats choka block?

The thing with large people and seats is practiced I have seen it done in the states, and often bought two seats myself- So I can get double luggage allowance (and sometimes miles to) if it works out cheaper than the excess baggage. The rule is in economy you must be able to put the arm rest down, if you cannot then you have to have two seats. Mostly the airline will try to accomadate you by putting you in a seat with an empty seat next to it. But sometimes the flight is full so they can't and the fat person has to be off loaded.

The 747-400 family all have a base MTOW of 875,000lbs. The ER variants up this to 910,000lbs.
MTOW - Maximum Take Off Weight.

Imagine being seated, and the stewardess comes up and asks you to leave the plane as you are a fat ba$tard Surely that would shame anyone into losing weight.

I would really hate to be the ground staff in this situation. I reckon it wouldnt matter how well you handle it, there would have to be some ill feeling in it.
The main problem with these largish passengers, is that they occupy the aisle seats, making it extremely difficult if not impossible for passengers seated inside from them to exit their seats. A real problem in an evacuation.

If done in the States, I reckon the person involved would be just seeing "$" in their eyes.

Which ones do you know, would like to investigate a little and see how they actually implement it.

MTOW is in standard conditions, but depending on runway length available and temperature, but on a short runway or on a very hot day it could be reduced.

I don't know which airline it was, but one of the domestic carriers in the US was on the TV recently doing just this. They were doing it visually at check-in, if they saw a fat guy in the line it was 'buy another seat or don't fly'.
