BA Baggage Policy
Just having a look for flights and saw BAs new policy announcement.
Worth checking if you are flying that route because excess baggage will now (from Feb 07) be charged at an eyewatering £120.

A bunch of robbers, thats all I can say about BA.
No doubt all other airlines will follow suit in due course
Before this new ruling comes in, as a family we used to pack two persons luggage in one case to a max of 30kg. Not any more, one case each now.
Thanks for the warning.

Most of them are down to 22kg now, but I'm thinking that they might well start to enforce it a bit more.

Air Asia 15kgs..
Also totally unflexible at being a tiny bit over.. When we came back from Bali we were 3kgs over between 2 people.. 1.5kg's a person !!! And I had one small piece of carry on yet they were letting people carry on 3 or 4 great big way oversized pieces.
So its ok to load up multiple huge bags of carry on, overload the cabins and overheads, delay takeoff and landing through this stupidity, but woe betide anyone with a KG more in thier bag !!
To add insult to injury they couldnt take VISA cards and I had to go and buy more local currency and waste the change !!

It seems the market is split e.g. Easyjet has no weight limit, Thai air dont rigorously enforce weight limits and we have others e.g. Ryan Air, 8 euro per KG over the 15kg limits and Air Asia etc charging as well

I was allowed 2 x 32kg When I started my contract in September on my long haul flight to LAX.
Now flying home they would want 240 quid off me!!!!!!
Good thing I am flying home on the 11th feb 2 days before their new policy comes out so I can fly to Thailand on the 15th
6 weeks to go

I would never fly BA, I'll stay with Thai, good service and we never had any problems with baggage, we fly Thai twice a year from Copenhagen, wife gets off in Bangkok and I'll continue to Phuket, the sector Bangkok-Phuket return are free, and every third year we get free cph-bkk-cph on the earned miles on our silver membership card, so Thai for me please.

Irrespective of how good Thai v BA are, there is still the possibility of Thai, and other airlines, joining the BA policy of charging a high fixed rate for excess baggage in Feb 07 or shortly after.
I can't see BA going alone on this one.

Time will show, but it's a possibility, but we can still make some of up by being a FF member, that gives at the moment 10 kg above the normal limit.

Carry on checked
On my last two trips to Thai from Sydney, the counter staff asked you to place your carry on to be weighed along with your checked lauggage.
Did see many people who had been told that they were over weight, to remove items to get the correct weight for each bag.....and then be stung with too much carry on and be charged. I believe the carry on weight is about 7-8kgs. The silly thing is if once you pass thru customs, you can buy up grog etc and would be well over weight (many times)...but they didn't think of that.
Only ever seen at Perth airport at boarding gate a scale to weigh carry on for the Joberg flight by SA.

Don't you think that might be one of the reasons why that are doing this, i.e. to allow more room inside the cabin for duty free etc ??
I used to fly every week in and around Europe and people used to take 3 or 4 bags on board with them, just so that they could exit quickly at the other end without having to check in luggage. It meant that the room inside the plane quickly got filled up and the last few passengers on board had no room for their bags. This in turn meant that cabin crew had to run up and down the place finding a space, re-arranging bags etc or even putting them in the cockpit. Airlines have had enough of this and now are taking action.
Quite right too in my opinion, as it was just getting ridiculous.

Totally agree with you there... I hate it when you have to put your bag half way down the plane away from you and not in visable sight or access.

I think this is a very good deal from BA. It makes them way way cheaper for excess baggage than everyone. I always have excess baggage. If I want to fly to Europe from BKK it will cost me about 20 GBP per Kilo. Now I can have 23 Kilos for only 120 GBP instead of 260 GBP. If I was going say Sydney London, the savings would be huge. Mostly I fly on Star alliance with my TG Gold Card 20 KG Extra, if I take my wife too (also Gold Card) Then we have 80 KG. So far it is always cheaper to buy her a ticket than go alone and pay 40Kg excess.
With the New BA Policy I might start flying with them again. Anyone know what their partner airlines are doing, like Qantas, Cathay and American Airlines lan Chile and Iberia ?

Maybe it is, if you are aware of it.
Can you imagine the many couples jetting off from London with BA after Feb 07 who have not heard about this?
Turn up at the airport with both of them packing say 27k in one suitcase, as before, and getting hit for £120 excess
I know this info will be well publicised beforehand, but not everyone will see it.
I wonder if travel agents will mention it when they send the tickets out?

Ive just read the baggage policy changes and to be honest i cant see any problem with it myself.
Why should airlines be flexible? They are saying here you go, you can only bring on 23kgs and thats it. They have turned a blind eye for so long to people brining on excess baggage that now they are taking action. If other airlines follow suit then fairplay to them.
Personally, for me, this will have no effect on me because i usually travel fairly light anyway but why should companies like British Airways etc have people taking the piss out of there policies? Its simple IMHO the rules are there you follow them or pay the money. People have the choice to fly with them and if people are not prepared to follow that policy then they should not fly with them.
I have always tried to stick with airline policy regardless if its ryanair's 15kg or BA's with 23kg simply because thats the rule of the airline.

In theory I agree with you, rules are rules, but if you pack 23kg departing, make sure you don't buy a single souvenier, present, pair of jeans tshirt, in fact anything because on your return trip, those items are going to cost another £120

In theory yes but you also have hand luggage aswell. It depends on how light/heavy a person travels. Also with stuff like laundry service's available at a lot of hotels (ok this can cost for a family much more than a single traveler).
In my hand luggage bag on the way out you will find only passport travel docs and MP3 Player/PSP which then gives me room on the return money for extra gifts, cigarettes and if i wanted i could easily get a pair of jeans, t-shirt etc in my hand luggage bag. I think now when people pack they will have to be a lot more carful about what they need. Realisticaly you dont need to have stuff like toiletries in your bag because they are easy to pick up everywhere. IMHO i think 23kg is a hell of a lot of baggage to take with you anyway, to much to lag around.
As i stated anyway from my point of view this will have no effect because i am a light traveler anyway, bare essentials only sort of person BUT yes i can see for some people, more families i would say, will be effected and yes i agree 120 gbp is harsh.
I personally believe this will become a trend with more of the major airlines.

23kg is not much, IMO, I used to bring loads of T-shirts and stuff home but now all you seem to be able to fit in is your own gear, not much spare room in 23 kilos.
I read this as a warning that they are going to start enforcing limits, because plenty of people have been taking the piss for years.
