Carry-on luggage size

Hi people,

Does anyone know if there is a "standard" carry-on luggage size?

For my next trip I am thinking of taking only one bag that I can get into the overhead lockers. I started looking at airline sites and they vary slightly in the dimensions.

I just wondered whether there was a set size.

Thanks

Dave

I think maybe you have answered your own question Dave. Check with whichever airlines you intend flying with. That should tell you.

As Roger said check your specific airline. US carriers allow a "standard" suitcase on-board along with a briefcase. No one said that the briefcase cannot contain clothes.
When you get to Thailand the rules on your domestic flight may be different; that is one of the reasons I pay 1000 baht more for business class on Thai Airways. Greater allowance and less hassle, plus the rest that comes with business class.

OT: Generally luggage allowances are greater flying on an itinerary that includes a US origination or destination, regardless of carrier. The standard for checked luggage is 2 x 70 lbs (2 x 32 kg). One exception is flying to or from a Commonwealth country where the limit per bag is slightly less.

Most airlines allow maximum dimensions of 45". However, I would suggest that you try and keep the carry on luggage to the minimum that you need. Have you ever got on board to find all the overhead bins full and tried to stick one of those 45" bags under the seat in front of you? Either that or get on board the plane first to make sure there is space in the overhead locker.

The baggage size is defined, so the baggage fits into the compartment above your head. This is a standard size, same for every airline, and you can ask in the shop for a carry on bag. There is a weight limit on it too, think about 8 kg.

Best thing is to buy a trolley.

Normally I take an additional rucksack with me, where i put my personal papers and my notebook.

Airline web site will tell you about what you can carry on exactly. Mostly weight is 7 Kgs. The carry on bag I always take is about 40cm x 50cm x 20 cm. Don't make it look rammed full and it should be ok. Its the weight that will get you. If you are at the gate and they decide they don't like the look of it they can ask you to check it. Mine is always over 7 kg and I either just ignore them and keep going, or tell them no I am not going to check it and just walk away. Whatch out if you are in somewhere like Sydney though as a Bell will ring if it is over 7 Kg and security will tell you that you have to check it. But they are only security it is up to the airline what they let you take into their the cabin.

This website lays out the basic do's and don't's of carry on luggage.

Airline Luggage Allowance Policies and Guidelines

To get the correct info, only the airline you are using can really tell you. Nobody here has each individual airlines carry on policy, so check with them first is my opinion.
