Phuket to Hau-Hin
Hi all, and a Happy New Year.
Well, just eleven months to go before I'm back there again... Me and my mate are staying in Phuket but would like to stay up to Hau Hin for a week to play golf. What would the best way to get there. We don't want to hire a car...we're both p'ss heads and it'll only end in trouble. Any idea's?
Thanks
Ferris

2 options
1) bus to Surat Thani and then train
2) fly to Bangkok and then train back down

Taxi from Bangkok for about 2500baht. Could try and hire a car/driver in Phuket, it seems to be around a ten hour drive. No idea how much that would cost.
I would probably break it up with a night in Bangkok, but I like Bangkok.

Bus from Phuket to Hua Hin is about 750-800 Baht. Just make sure it is a "VIP" bus - which is an airconditioned coach. Trip takes about 10 hrs.
From Bangkok, you can get a private taxi to HH, which as Steve pointed out, will cost around 2000 Baht. The fare will be negotiated, rather than off the meter.
You can also catch a train to Hua Hin from Bangkok, or a ten-seater mini-bus - both of these options are about 150Baht (plus/minus 30 Baht).

I wouldn't bother with the train from BKK it takes longer than going by road. That's the best route IMO - fly to Bangkok then bus down to Hua Hin, but then as there are two of you a 1k split for a taxi is a nice option.
I agree with steve about staying a night in BKK, to be honest 7 days sounds like a lot for Hua Hin. If you use BKK as a base you always have the option of a trip down to pattaya for a couple of nights.

Forget the bus Phuket to Hua Hin even if it's supposed to be a VIP one. I've done it the other way and the first 6 hours was VIP bus to SuratThani, then an hour wait, then 4 hours on a rickety old bus with windows open to Phuket town. We were not told the VIP bus wasn't going all the way
Save yourself some grief and fly to BKK for 2000baht or less and then a 2000baht 1.5 to 2 hour taxi ride to Hua Hin.

I went to Hua Hin from phuket, i flew to bangkok and then flew direct from bangkok to Hua Hin only a 45 mn flight in a little 12 seater cessna. but obviously more expensive than taxi , but great aerial views of Hua Hin and fun to watch the pilot up close flapping about with the controls. Could not face a ten hour coach journey anywhere never mind to a lovely place like Hua Hin. If i am going somewhere ,lets get there as quickly and as painless as possible.

Cheers
Thanks Everyone,
Think I'll opt for 'use Bangkok as a base' option, have a couple of days there and then get a taxi down to Hau- HIn. I've only been to Bangkok once, and that was only for a weekend...still much to see and do!!
Thanks for all the info lads

Reckon using BKK as a base is the best idea and especially as you then can play golf in Bangers or go down to Pattaya as well. More than acouple of nights in Hua Hin would drive me stir crazy!!

how much baggage do you have ?
there is a minibus from victory station every 10 minutes (or about when it is full). Goes straight to HuaHin nonstop, about 2 hours drive. 250 Baht all inclusive.
I did it last year, took Skytrain to Victory Station, walked down, took next minibus and got out in the center of Hua Hin. Same procedure back. Quite easy.
