cheapest way is not always the best way......depends if ya like long coach or train journeys, and if u got a bit of time on your hands,as these take up a good day if not longer .
i.e phuket to chang mai by 'vip'bus .........phuket-bangkok 12 or so hours....bangkok to chang mai 12 hours...cost around 800-1000b.
train is another option,i prefer, more space, can walk about, sleeper as well if u book ,2nd class fan was fine for me,bottom bunk a bit bigger if i remember correctly, was comfy,if u take this option,it will be train cm- bkk 12 hours ,bkk-surathani 10 hours ,then u have to bus it to phuket which takes around 3-4 hours, bear in mind there will be waiting around aswell on top.cost around 1000b.
or u could save yourself time and hassle and just get the plane.
as u dont know exact dates u wont be able to book in advance and poss get some cheaper deals......so......
cm-bkk 2500b
bkk-hkt 2000b
so could look at it this way.....4500b+ for flights
1000 b for train or plane.
time and money is what u gotta weigh up.
3500 b can get u a long way in LOS.
i suppose its personal preference at the end of the day as well
hope this helps.

Good post Wylos...... Fly.. Its to long a journey especially if time is an issue. If you had plenty of time on your hand then taking a bus/train would be ideal to see the country with stops on the way... go to Thai Airways and have a look at the prices.

It would be if you had time on your hands... Unemployed and traveling or you have a long vacation... This i agree with. I would love to do something like that one day, but when you have time constraints then plane everytime

train was a great experience.......although u dont see the contry side in the dark(if yer on a sleeper),but ive had some top laughs gettin on the piss,if ya get a good carriage i.e peeps up for the craic.
had a full on party once ,tunes the lot, just came from laos so were fully stocked, crate of beer lao, fair few bottles of spirits flying about......then there was what ever the others had.carnage.
as u said whakito.....travelling by car, bus is a great way to see the country.

I got the chance to travel by car because my gf used to pick me up at bkk airport ,lead me in her home town <pithsanulok> have a few days rest and then move to chiang mai, where she used to go because of her job, must admitt she is a good driver, she spends most of the day driving.

Chiang Mai - Bangkok is an ok road trip in my experience. You can break it up nicely with a stop at Sukothai and that is worth seeing.
Have to say that if I wanted to do Chiang Mai - Phuket I would fly, the road trip to Phuket is agony. Maybe road to Bangkok and then fly to Phuket?

There is a direct flight with ThaiAir from CNX to HKT, but not the reverse. Flight time about 2 hours. Think it is worth the cost, about 4000 Baht, when you gain a full day.

Whilst there in November, we had to bounce up to Chaing Mai for a wedding but was never informed about the direct Phuket-Chaing Mai flights! - had to fly to Bangkok then onto Chiang Mai 3600 baht. On the return leg we decided we couldn't be bothered with flying anymore so booked an overnight VIP coach back to Bangkok @ 550 baht and just flew the last leg from Bangkokm to Phucket.
Next time over, we will be doing a lot more of the overnight VIP coaching stuff - saves losing any time with check ins at airport etc... and you still get to enjoy the entire day wherever you may be before an overnight and sleep before arriving wherever you are wishing to be.
Only down side is that most of the overnight coaches arrive at their destinations very early ion the morning - so is wise to organise a room somewhere the day before, allowing you to catch up on those couple of extra hours kip before the place wakes up and your day starts all over again
