Book late but not too late...
The old adige is to book flights early, the last month or so though the prices have come way down from their standings a few months ago. Back in November I was looking at £450 for Jan/Feb time and generally that's now come down by about £50. If you can get <£400 for Jan now I expect there to be similar value in waiting for those looking for March time. Certainly for flights in May the prices right now are way over the top and have to come down significantly.
The real reason for posting though is to say wait on the prices but don't leave it too late. I've ****ed up by doing just this
To be honest I got a bit cocky over all these £400 flights everywhere. Just a few days ago I could have got nearly any date I wanted for the end of Jan for £400-£420 (was planning on 26th/27th for 3 1/3 weeks in my head). Checking today however - all gone. I was holding out on seeing the last £10-£20 shaved off the price, what I got this afternoon however is shitting myself at seeing £450s, £500s, £540s all over the place.
I'm lucky in being flexible on the dates though so with a bit of jigging around found a flight for £389 by bringing the dates forward. It's also the "good" stopover Ehitad flight, many of the price-hiked ones above were the long stopover ones
I'm relieved I guess but it does mean I miss chinese new year, I've got my fingers burned a little so I've learned by lesson over this. Just thought I'd post this as a reminder for BMs about what can happen...

Booking 3-4 weeks prior to departure for US carriers is what I have found to be the best policy for getting the best prices..

Posted on another thread that I think anything sub £500 is a bargain for us now, the fuel surcharge alone is over £100. I do fly from Manchester tho, maybe a little cheaper from London.

I just checked todays price on the same flight I got - £485
There must be an army of mongers all turning up for the start of Feb. All the usual haunts - Nana, Majestic, Manhattan, Swiss Park...booked solid for the next month. Maybe everyone got the same idea to avoid peak season and go at the end of Jan, I notice with the flight price jumps it's all centered around the last weekend of the month and bleeding into the days either side of it. The 24th is now a write off, probably the 23rd too in a few days time.

Cue competition for an appropriate collective noun for a group of mongers...

How about a Whorde !!!!
horde
1. a large group, multitude, number, etc.; a mass or crowd: a horde of tourists.
2. a tribe or troop of Asian nomads.
3. any nomadic group.
4. a moving pack or swarm of animals

I would wait tas for sure, June is rock bottom cheap. Last year at the end of May I got £400 with EVA going direct. I remember seeing indirect for £320 but that was a long stopover in russia.

Beware savings that are not savings. £320 might sound like a bargain, but an 18 hour layover in some God forsaken hellhole ending in 'stan' might change your mind.

That said, the real bargains do originate in London, so I can't take them. Eva look like a real good bet sometimes. Did you check westeast travel?

i have been checkin EVA myself for around march time, best i seen is £480,last march i paid £425,hopefully it will come down within the month, really good deal for that price......£480 isnt bad either........but just going out of season/off peak(march through to nov) £425 was the norm last year.

Eva have probably worked the fuel surcharge into that price, so its not so bad.

With the new UK airport tax and the fuel surcharge (which I think is not going away any time soon), I reckon £450 or therabouts is a bargain.

What is low season ??
Everyone wants the lowest fare, however, trying to predict the airlines pricing structure is like trying to catch a fish with my bare hands. If you see a fare that is close to what you are expecting and it is within you budget - book it! and don't sweat it if it goes up by a few €/£/$.

agree to an extent, but you can see how many seats in each class and make predictions on that....
If you see a good fare take it.
I have reached the stage where business class < 3x economy so biz it is

I have to correct myself a bit as I'm confusing trips - I just remembered it wasn't EVA that time but rather Thai Airways I got the May flight with.
Totally agree about paying the extra to avoid the stopover, an additional factor is that you inevitably spend a few quid at the airport so that eats into the savings anyway. That said I'm looking forward to the 1-hour stopover middle east route this time. I need to experience it for myself to know for sure but on paper at least it seems by far the best way, better than direct even.
I've noticed on a few searches I see Sri Lanka Airlines here and there with the cheapest flights. I think a lot of those from £xxx "offers" might be with them but I've not read about them or anyone with experiences flying to BKK with them. Maybe could be a player in a few months time.

booked mine for 1st feb with thai air, just over 650notes with fuel charges+ travel insurance. No doubt i could have got it cheaper if i waited around or picked another airline, but I've been twice with them and had no problems before and i like the peace of mind that everythings arranged, all i need is to turn up on time

I paid £470 for April, no complaints with that as I have to fly from Manchester. Saving a couple of quid is not my biggest priority, but it's nice when it happens.
