I flew into Suvarnabhumi Airport from the states on Feb. 18, 2007, and departed from Suvarnabhumi Airport on March 5. It's a very nice, spacious airport. Make sure you stop at all your shops or get your food before going to your gate because there is nothing at the gate. While there I read a story in the Bangkok Post about the airport but there was no talk about it closing to international travel.

Any news on Air Asia?? If they move to DMK there is no way I can make my transfers in time. Also, if I have to change my tickets, is it fair I should pay for the change when they are ones moving airports??

Time to email AirAsia methinks

I just had this mailed to me from Lazy Vacation,

Don Muang To Re-Open on March 25
Bangkok's old airport is scheduled to reopen on March 25. The date for the reopening coincides with the beginning of the summer flight schedules, and is aimed at relieving the strain on five-month old Suvarnabhumi International Airport while parts are closed off for repairs. Don Muang will serve three budget airlines, One-To-Go Airlines, Nok Air and PB Air, alongside the domestic services of Thai Airways International (THAI). Don Muang will serve 77 flights a day: 25 Nok Air flights, eight of PB Air and 32 of THAI.
The plan for Don Muang's future will be evaluated six months after the reopening.Transport Minister Theera Haocharoen said the combined use will enable Bangkok to serve up to 80 million air travelers annually, and the capacity would be suitable for the next ten years. Expansion plans for Suvarnabhumi would be postponed for the meanwhile, with repairs and maintenance enjoying first priority. The Minister has also ordered the speeding up of the Airport Link railway, which will connect Suvarnabhumi with the inner city. The exact flight numbers of those returning to the old airport will soon be announced.
Don Muang Airport to The Rescue

Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont has announced that for the first six months of its re-opening, expected around the end of March, Don Muang International Airport will serve only non-connecting domestic flights. The issue of returning to the old airport has been met with resistance from the Board of Airline Representatives, who protest the costliness of managing split operations. At present, no international flights will be moved back, and it is up to Airports of Thailand (AOT) to ensure that Suvarnabhumi International Airport continues to provide safe services while it is being repaired.
According to the Transport Minister, Theera Haocharoen, the return of non-connecting domestic flights to Don Muang will reduce air traffic at Suvarnabhumi by 71 flights a day. The minister will propose the return for cabinet approval next week. He said that returning to Don Muang will be on voluntary decision by airlines. The possibility of returning international flights to Don Muang will be assessed later. This is based on its capacity to relieve the strain on Suvarnabhumi, while the latter undergoes major reconstruction and probable delays in expansion. Meanwhile, the interim Thai government has given its assurance that the airports issue is high on its list of national priorities.
Two airlines permanently returning to the old airport are Nok Air and One-To-Go. Further details regarding airlines' decisions and the flights that will be affected are expected to be announced soon.

3 and a bit weeks to go and counting, cant wait now,

THE HOOF

According to the latest issue of the Phuket post Nok Air will be moving its daily flights back to Don Muang from 24th March.

It offically reopens on the 25th March
Air Asia and some Thai Airways flights will move back to there.

I wonder what will happen with the Airport codes.

When Suvarnabhumi first started to received flights, but before it offically opened its code was NBK. Then it took over Don Muangs' BKK. I bet it doesn't give it back.

Suvarnabhumi will be BKK and Don Muang becomes DMK.

Can you post a link to this please. I'm waiting on Air Asia to confirm whether they are using Don Muang from 25/3 or not.

I can't see that info from the last two days editions.

Sorry I only have the Hard Copy of the paper. It is issue No 49. 10th March. Page 2 under National News. The bit about air asia exactly says "Thai Airways, Nok Air and Thai Air Asia all plan to move some or all of their domestic operations there."

Everything about this new/old airport has been stressful reading...

It's annoying (more so for you) not being able to get definitive answers to seemingly simple questions.

Just to add a little here.

I got a phone call from my travel agents yesterday and they told me that my flight from Phuket to Bangkok had been changed.

The time was still the same (as far as i am aware anyway) but instead of heading to the new airport i was going to DMK (the flight is with Thai Air). I have no connecting flight so for me this is no issue, but be careful when you book flights (if you have a connecting flight anyway) My flight was booked before all this so maybe this will cause some other board members some problems.... Maybe not but thought i'd mention this anyway.

Well at least it has all been sorted now.

I was going to book an Air Asia flight to Udon as I thought they were moving to Don Muang and Thai Air were staying at Suk after origionaly saying they were moving flights to Udon to DM.

So if no change now it looks like Thai air from Don Muang to Udon Thani. Unless I feel a bit tight and book Nok Air.

True, Both Thai air and Nokai will fly to Udon Thani from Don Muang. Have been checking this during the past few days for myself. For Air Asia, I don't know, but they are no option for me due to their schedule times. See also me thread on how to go from one airport to the other one.

Too bad, but we can't do anything about it. For a flight in the 2nd half of May, Nokair charges about 3800 baht for a Nok Plus ticket and Thai Air is about 6300 baht.
