Chinese aircraft maintenance

An article about an unnamed Chinese carrier:

I am a pilot and this creeps me out. This sort of damage can be spotted from inside the terminal if you can actually see the aircraft. Or, on your walk across the tarmac assuming you approach from the front.

I guess you need to work out the odds. Given the number of aircraft in the world flying at any one time the odds of a problem are pretty slim.

I prefer to fly on the airlines I feel are safer (Qantas - although not as good as 15 years ago, Air New Zealand, Singapore, Thai, BA, etc).

Just my thoughts.

Been reading the threads about the new BKK airport..

They really seem to have screwed the pooch on that !! runway coming apart quite badly after only a couple of months of use.. Loss of face continues.. Its like Thailand in minature, big dreams, poor execution... Ohh and lots of corruption and theft.

Sad but the new hub of asia.. LOL

The new airport has made the Sydney papers as well.

It was going to showcase Thailand as a modern, progressive Asian country. Unfortunately, it seems dogged by political influence and contractual corruption.

I read that it was opened early as a political directive. They are now building more toilets, etc.

Hope it can be sorted soon.

just last year travellers and fellow bms were concerned and confused regarding where they were going to be landing when the new airport was in the process of being opened,,seems like deja vu dont ya think?some planes have been having to circle for sometime then get clearance because of low fuel a few had to land at allternative airports,,,,the saga continues,,this is quite unbelievable.

It was Air China and this happened years ago. The aircraft was grounded in Frankfurt.

Looks more like China Airlines colours, to me. They are Taiwanese not mainland, and have a pretty aweful crash record.

Cool China Air

I fly with China Air to Europe and they are a good carrier.Their cabin staff are way more attentive and helpful than Thai.

I was on a flight once that sucked a bird or two into an engine and before we could continue maintenance had to inspect the fan blades. The captain informed us that there were no visible damage, however, measurements had to be taken first.
I was sitting so that I could observe the whole process. Took them 30 minutes with all sorts of gauges, before we were allowed to go.

Compare the two approaches to safety and you clearly see black and white.

After Review...

Several points:

(1) This engine could not have been operated in that condition.
(2) The belts are certainly there to keep the fanblades in place during transit.
(3) The engine was most likely shipped to a repair facility after ingesting metal debris.
(4) While it _could_ have been shipped attached to an aircraft (ferried IOW) that is an expensive, error-prone way to move such a large item.

So... IMHO this is a legitimate picture of a damaged engine. But whether it was attached to an aircraft at the same time that aircraft was transporting paying passengers is doubtful. Note that a four-engine airplane would fly safely with only three operable engines. But it would fly much lower and much slower and Air Traffic Controllers would notice. The point is that someone somewhere-- particularly in Western Europe-- would ask questions.

If you read through the entire comments section you will see some very good comments as to the authenticity of the comments relating to these pictures. I've also seen pics in Australian Aviation magazine showing a Qantas 747 carrying a fifth engine (common practice) for ferrying engines to other ports. By the way I just love this forum.

When a plane crashes in China

The most dagerous airlines are the asian ones by far.

I worked in a hotel that had many aircraft people, captians, maintenence, buyers, etc.

First of all some Chinese airlines will reuse stuff off off of older planes.

When a plane crashes in China they sweep it up....period. No investigation etc.

The cockpit chain of command in China the captain is the boss and he dosen't recieve adverse advice to his directions.

In a western cockpit everyone chimes in, in some Asian ones they just rely on the captain.......Excuse me captain ...is that a mountain?

Big differance between Air china and Cathay.

They are still safer than a night with geespot and a bottle of scotch.

I think the OP was referring to the quality of service rather than safety.

Technically both Air China and Cathay are BOTH Chinese Airlines, though I know what you mean.

Have also seen the sweep under the carpet coverups in the middle east though (to my knowledge) it's been quite a few years since a major one.

Not sure where it is safest to fly these days! I've certainly had the misfortune to be in some chunks of metal at altitude thinking "I hope this thing makes it"

Keld will back me up on Iraqi 'Scareways' I think he told me he had taken them once....Never again. Luckily, I have no reason to use them again. Eastern Europe and the CIS (Kazakstan, Tajikistan etc) leave alot to be desired also. These are places that if you come down on the runway, you'll be lucky to see a fire engine, never mind an ambulance!

Internal flights in Africa, Guinea, Sierra Leone (Diamond Airlines is eight Mi-8 Hip Helos) Malawi....infact, insert African country name here! are all a little bit......"We fix de ting tomorrow man, it's good for one more flight innit! - (Spent some time in London on a course!)

So far, so good in SE Asia and the airlines around here. Like a lot of passengers I am another one who sits looking at the wings thinking will those rivets hold and why has the "No Step" sign on the engine cover got a footprint on it!

Your right Cathay is Chinese but I don't think of it that way (as you stated as well) as they usually have expat pilots, and it's run very differantly. However as the expats retire they are hiring more Hong Kong guys to fly.

Fewer Plane Crashes In 2006

Fewer planes crashed worldwide in 2006 than in any year since 1963, but the 1,292 death toll was in line with the average of the past 10 years, a Geneva-based monitoring agency reported on Tuesday.

Last year there were 156 plane crashes, 22 fewer than in 2005, while the number of people killed in accidents fell 11 percent compared with the previous year, the Aircraft Crashes Record Office (BAAA) said in a statement.

North America saw the most crashes, with 32 percent of the total, followed by Africa with 18 percent and Asia with 17 percent.

The worst accident occurred in Ukraine, where 170 people were killed when a Tupolev-154 crashed on August 22.

The agency included only planes capable of carrying at least six people.
