British Airways are to start charging for each "extra" suitcase.

BA to charge £120 for each extra suitcase

British Airways has sparked controversy by adding £240 to the cost of a long-haul return flight if a passenger puts two bags in the airline hold.

The rule, which comes into effect on Tuesday, will also add £120 to all domestic flights and journeys to Europe.

But the first that many BA customers will know about the change will be when they check in at airports next week.


The rule means that customers will be able to put a bag with a maximum weight of 23kg into the hold. But if they put two, even if the combined weight is below the 23kg limit, they will have to pay £120 per item or £240 if it is a long-haul flight.

Flights to America, Canada, Bermuda, the Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico will be exempt from the change but all other long-haul routes will be restricted to one bag in economy class. All European destinations will be hit unless passengers fly Club class.

Notice how North American destinations are exempt. I doubt that US carriers will be that strict and it obviously would be a competitive disadvantage to implement these rule when competing with US carriers. Currently most, if not all, US carriers are 2 x 50 lbs domestic and 2 x 70 lbs international.

Aye, IMHO, 30Kgs of clobber for a holiday has got to be enough! Especially coming here. The majority I've heard fly over with next to nowt and head home with as much cheapo stuff as they can fit in thier newly purchased 'Adibas' holdall most of the time.

Flip-flops (also available here) Thong, wad of cash, debit card............30 Ounces more like.

If you were heading out full-time then 30Kgs isn't going to cut it and special rates can be achieved with a bit of emailing to the relevent airline etc BUT.........for 2-3 weeks stick to the airlines that offer the 30Kgs (If you need all that!) and just give BA the finger.

It is not unusual for me to travel home with 80+ kg when visiting Asia/Thailand. Over a couple of trips I have brought home Royal Thai dinner ware to 18 people (6 pc per setting , plus extras). I take advantage of the liberal rules flying to the US. One time me and my ex had nearly 200 kg (incl cabin luggage)

My case is very light going to LOS, but on my return it was full (strides, jeans, shirts etc.) and still it only weighed 30kg.

By the time you pack loads of chinaware, wooden stuff, a large solid bronze kneeling guardian angle, etc., no problem. I bring home the oddest things, including Danish butter (can't find in US), a couple of thousand incense, and on and on ...

This IMO is good news for traveller, it always was 23 Kg with BA (compared to 20 KG with many other carriers including THAI) the only difference is now you can only take one bag. That is the down side.

Now the up side, an extra bag up to 23 KG is only 120GBP - 96 GBP if you pay online first. Previously it would cost you 30GBP per KG Sydney London, about 20 GBP BKK London. So now it is way cheaper. It is actually cheaper than air freight!

Not only this they now allow you an extra piece for sports equipment Like Golf Clubs etc up to 23 KG Free. Practically no one officially gives you that much. (EK allow skywards members a free golf set, with no specified upper limited on weight) You can even have up to 45 Kg of sports equipment Free if you call them and book in advance

I would say this now makes them the most generous of any carrier excluding US carriers. the 50 Lb (23KG) x 2 piece on the US carriers also includes Central America as well as domestic USA flights.

Hold on.. If I understand this its no additional free luggage..

Your post makes it sound like you can have an 'extra' 23 KG bag for only 120 GBP.. You then compare the extra luggage fees (on one of the world longest routes I might add).. But its not an extra 23 KG or excess baggage is it ?? Its simple a new charge of 120 GBP per bag for 2 bags even if still within the limits.. 240 GBP for the same amount of baggage !!!

All luggage aside I wont set foot on them again.. Forgotton who the customer is and what service is supposed to be like.. Even cheapie airlines put them to shame..

I will never fly with BA through choice No doubt this moneymaking scheme will filter through to other airlines in time too

Well its money to save

If you must have with you more packages you can have 30% discount with
prebooking on internet

Also sporting gear will not be charged with extra fees,the same with Baby
gear and things.

Probably gonne see a lot of crammed ski bags and diaper bags in the future
