No More Exit Tax

Having been caught in the past with no more Thai money and faced with a 500 baht exit tax as the plane is leaving, I came prepared this time. No more! It's included in the plane ticket now. Started Feb 1. I changed it at in Hong Kong and had a beer.

Yes a beer will not leave you much change out of that at the airport, and you can't even smoke in the bar, anymore

I bought a Thai Air ticket in January and the tax is prepaid.

Yes it went up at the same time that the tax was supposed to be included in the taxes collected at the time of ticketing.

This seems really confusing….some pay ….some don’t. Have to wonder how that works. Guess one should still have their 700B just to be on the safe side.

Everybody pays, it is just a matter of whether it is collected in advance. The airline can easily see in the records whether you paid that tax or not. It is now ultimately the airlines obligation to make sure the taxes are collected.

I notice on Air Asia site, the breakdown of fares on the ticket back from Phuket, there is a MYR 70 for airport tax, wasnt there before.

My question is, isnt MYR 70 less than 700 Baht?

The rate is a little less than 10, in the order of 3-5%. It is not uncommon for a business to fix currency exchange rates for a certain time frame and take some losses or some wins. It is a lot easier than constantly doing updates.
If Air Asia collects slightly less than the Thai government wants to collect the airline will have to make up the difference.

There will be a bit of a period of flux, with some people having paid in advance and others having to pay on the day. As of 1 Feb any ticket purchased should have the tax incorporated in it. I hope this is seen as a positive comment and not negative by other BMs

Possibly due to the agent buying the tickets bulk from the airline before these changes were made. As Simbo says, it will take a while for this type of thing to filter through so that it's included in all tickets.

I bought tickets in Jan 07 in Aust for flights in Feb 07 thru travel agent, imagine my supprise to be told at BKK airport that the tax was included in the ticket. But to be on the safe side I will still carry Thai Baht, just in case.

I'm waiting to find out what happens with the GF ticket which was paid for on line with Singapore Airlines.

I think they are.

I have just booked another ticket to come over at the end of April and the tax is a lot higher than the ticket I payed for last week (booked 4 weeks ago) -exit tax that is.

I think it's more a case of them not mentioning that the tax is included. Can't think of any other reason why it's now higher. Can't access my Yahoo account here in the office (to check confirmations), but will check exact amounts later or tomorrow.
