Good accomodation - Bad accomodation

On arrival to Phuket (4 nights ago) we stayed at the Poppa Palace. This was pre-booked through Asiarooms and cost 1550Bt a night with breakfast (although did not eat this .so can't comment). It is a small hotel with pleasent staff, small pool, a lift and firm bed mattress.
There was really no down side to this hotel apart from when I asked about extending stay they wanted 1900Bt a night despite knowing I could book on internet cheaper

We looked around for something more Guest house style than hotel. (we have stayed at both the Merlin Beach and Coral Beach hotels before and whilst beautiful they offer a lot of things we don't use) We found Nine Ten Mansion which looked great. The rooms have wood panelling and tiled floors. The price was 1000Bt a night with free WiFi access. The the bad stuff started:
The mattress was as hard as rock - so bad we hardly slept and I woke with a sore back.
The room smelt of toilet drain and became quite offensive (especially as we had not used the toilet).
The Aircon was loud and the temp setting did not work very well.
The WiFi needed to have the DNS settings entered on the computer and the staff did not know this so asked the computer shop next door - he had obvoiusly been asked to sort this out before because he knew the settings by memory - no problems, nice chap, Next day hotel tried to charge me 100Bt for his service (cheap but not my problem). After 2 nights we left.

Have now found the FERB Guest house and are staying our first night. Clean and tidy. Shower not very strong but works well off it's own heater. Aircon is quite even has silent setting for night use) - there is also a fan. Room safe, TV. Bed mattress is firm but not rock. Fridge is well stockedbut pleanty of space for own stuff. Room we have is very large. Internet is via ethernet cable (provided) so those who don't have WiFi can still plug in. The cost is 800Bt which seems great. We looked at at least 10 places at this is certainly the best value we found. The restaurant also looks good and fair priced (110 - 200Bt for a main) and we are giving it a go tonight.

Sorry if this sounds like an add but may be useful to others - if nothing else avoid Nine Ten Mansion (oh and the hot water often ran out).

Glad you've found "base camp". Although you have had a bad experience you now have somewhere to return to on your next trip.

Saves the hassle of looking around and you know what your getting.....peace of mind.

Wow, sounds like a nice vacation you're having.... shopping for place to stay, until you find a place where everthing works. Maybe, once you find it, it will be time to go.

Asian beds are FIRM... maybe rock. Get used to it. At least you are not sleeping on the floor or on a futon mat on a wooden crate. You're not in Kansas anymore Dorothy.

You're not going to get creature comforts 100% of the time in Thailand, unless you are willing to spend more than you are indicating.

I liked the rooms at Ferb aswell, hope to stay there next week if they have any room, 800 baht is good aswell, looked at the yorkshire inn and prices still at 1800.

Will add my remarks about Ferb after this trip.

I hv stayed at Ferb guesthouse n it is nice. Stayed there during New Year.
The onlything which was not good at that time was the construction which was next door. I hope that they hv stopped now. The breakfast is good.
The owner is a chief from Sweden so makes good food. As metter said the shower is not strong n that was the onlything with hotel I didn't like. No problem with guests.

I have stayed in many countries in many star classes (and not rated). We spent about 3-4 hours looking for a place to stay and unfortunatly found the Nine Ten to be very poor compared to others, we then choose FERB as it was the best of the lot (did not go there first as Nine Ten had better location). Poppa was nice but not worth anthing like the money they wanted.

Firm mattress ok but as I have a bad back rock no good - no point in staying anywhere where you can't sleep - you are better to move. I expect cheap rooms to be basic, but functional. Never been to Kansas and I only use the name Dorothy at weekends but your point is wrong - 1000Bt at Nine Ten is not cheap. There are rooms avalible for 500Bt so I would expect a 1000Bt room to be a lot better. This is half the price I can get a hotel back home for so in a poor country I would expect quite a lot for this price.

The Ferb proves this is right - after just having my first night there I can say it's great. Food was fantastic and fair value - beer good price, service very good.

The construction is still ongoing and noise started this morning at 8am but that's fine with my sleep pattern and at 9am my wife is still sleeping so it's not loud enough to wake her (have to make my own coffee then).

It is just as good in the flesh. Don't think we will have any problems. Without being too complacent you feel safer about your belongings in the room when you go out.

Welcome to the board metter.

Valid enough points made on the accomodation front. After all everyone has their own tastes, likes, dislikes etc and if on vacation, well as long as your happy, isn't that the whole point!

I stayed in the Horizon beach resort back in 2004, a couple of weeks before the Tsunami, was around 2500 per night back then - no meals included, though was a very nice hotel/complex, weren't guest friendly at all, an extra 2000 a night if I wanted company to stay over. had a room safe, tv and telephone. Decent enough rooms but nothing to write home about.

As I had booked it as part of the flight deal, I chose to leave and head across the road, well narrow street really - found a guest house bar type place, aircon, sat T.V, minibar fridge, en-suite etc for 600 a night and no worries about guests - actually worked out cheaper to stay in that place with company and LDs, BFs etc than simply paying the guest fee per night at the Horizon.

Just used the Horizon as a wardrobe and pool area after that.

Last two times down have ended up staying at tha Baantonsai - in the de-luxe rooms. Is more of a chalet complex really, but at between 650 - 900 per night (for the de-luxe) depending on season, you get a decent and clean en-suite room with air-con and fan, sat T.V, P.C point, minibar, sink, fridge and small balcony etc, as well as a decent enough pool to chill out by during the day.

I don'tr care too much for the over enthusiastic hotel type accomodation so this suites me just fine.

Well our last night (12 in total at the Ferb) and I can honestly say it has been great.
The construction next door can be a little noisy but has not affected our sleep at all.
It has been clean and very comfy. Will def use again and can recommend
