The only construction I'm aware of was finished before Christmas. They knocked a few buildings down and put a small soi in with 4 bars, restaurant, beauty salon, internet cafe and laundry. They also gutted another building and turned it into a massage place.

Opposite the 4 or so small bars there is a small laundry, salon, internet place, and a great little restaurant with good, cheap food. It seems to always have people there all day long. The bars seems awfully quiet, but usually have a few people there by the time i stagger in late.

Yeah, the restaurant is great. It's run by the Bao, who is the wife of a younger brother of the bloke who owns the C&N. The bar on the corner is the Black Crab and it is not all that quiet as it is often still open at 6 am (the boss got done in the 2 am clamp down recently). And if you are lucky you could get Lucky!! The Black Dog in the same soi is another allright bar for a night cap before retiring to the C&N.

If your talking about the restaurant for food (good Thai with some farang breakfasts and burgers), or the Black Crab for a night cap (and maybe last minute company - try Lucky but there are others, depending upon who is looking after the cattle back home) or the C&N for accom, or the various massage places in the soi (very good), or the wireless internet, or .... then you'll be happy and I'll see you there! I arrive on 4th April evening.

I think you'll enjoy the area and it is only a stones throw from Bangla. I'll be in BKK (got to organise a visa to Oz for the GF) on 18th but if you are at a loose end I'll be back in Patong without GF on 21st and happy to have a beer or two with you at the Black Crab. You can give me a ring on my Thai number 0879 536 634 (which obviously only works when I'm in Thailand!)

SirDougless i notice your avatar is from Sala Keo Kou, just outside Nong Khai. Its a real unusual place, but i really enjoyed it, stunning statues.
Best of luck with the Visa for the GF!

Ha, You are someone who has travelled outside of Patong! Yes, you are correct. Nong Khai was a great place to visit and I'll return again.
As for the GF, she was in Oz for 9.5 weeks (think about it - movie with Micky Rourke and refrigerator???) last year, but it is never easy to get a Thai girl to Oz. And I think it is racist and wrong but there is no point in making a fuss, otherwise she would never get here.
I'm reasonably confident in getting her here for 3 months over winter (won't she love that!) but after that we are looking at some sort of 'partner visa'.
So if any Aussies are out there with some experience with getting Thai girls into Oz on anything other than a tourist visa PLEASE let me know!!!

Well if she's already been out to Oz once already on a tourist VISA then the hardest part has already been done - proving your relationship to the embassy.
Your experience sounds similar to mine. 2 x 3 month tourist visa's for the GF (one winter, one summer) - the second one pretty much a formality. As for a partner visa - you will be looking at either a fiancee (going to marry) or spouse (married already) application. We got married and did the spouse visa. Just a few more documents, medicals and interviews etc. There are some good threads on this board already about this and of course there is the thaivisa forum which is the motherload. Good luck!

Oskin, sounds like you and I should have a few beers together, because you have some knowledge that I need!!! I'm in early stages with the GF (well, just over a year) but it looks like our relationship is going places so your advice/experience would be welcome.
Appreciate an email to sirdougless@gmail.com. The beers are on me if you are in Patong in April, or October or December/January.
