Oh so close!!!
I am a Silver Member in Cathay Pacific's FF Program
I was 494 miles short of retaining my Silver Status that was up on March 31st
i e-mailed them and asked if they could just round me up and Cathay being the incredible airline that it is, accomadated me.
I really dont think i could go back to being just a regualr member. Thery are the only airline i fly from nyc to Vancouver and also to BKK
Just the access to the lounges alone is worth it, but when you add in the priority baggage and the amount of upgrades I get, it would've been hard to go back to mormal status
I wrote this post just to show that it doesnt hurt to shoot of an e-mail once in awhile

I know what you mean........
I hate flying econ! After you experience the lushness of the airline lounges and the free bees that come with them. Or the upper members of the card schemes!
I have to say I thought the Bangkok air, Blue ribbon lounge (I think that what it was called!) was very nice at BKK. But it did take me a while to find! Phom Phen on the other hand you may of well stayed in their normal lounge apart from the free stuff!
That reminds me I have to send my stubs off to Thai, for my new card.

that doesnt mean you shouldnt try and get as high as you can in a FF program
id encourage people to be loyal to one airline if they can-even if that means paying a little extra on flights when you could pay cheaper on another airline
I am still buying economy tickets but get a alot of extras by being a Silver member

nah, a plane just get you somewhere, thats its job - think of all the extra money it's cost you to fly one (and not the cheapest) airline exclusively.
I'll take the extra $500 and just sleep through the flight thanks.

well for me
it works out because Cathay also happens to be the best direct flight Vancouver-NYC, and cheap at about 420usd
but even if it wasnt, if i was paying 200-400usd above every flight and get upgraded every other time, i still see worth in that
not to mention the access to lounges, baggage priority
there has even been times i have jumped a waiting list, so that is worth something also

At the end of last year I was just under 1000 miles short of getting Gold with Emirates , thought I'd have to wait till after my Christmas trip to get them. But one month before my flight I got a wonderful shiny Gold card in the mail , also got upgraded on my flight back.
Costs me nothing to have the card ,and get lots of benefits , so for me at least it's worth having.

I NORMALLY fly with china air or klm via glasgow and amsterdam but this time i will be going with emerites as i have been told that its a fantastic flight with plenty of leg room etc so if what i have heard is true i will use them all the time from now on especially as i lke the idea of doing 2 thirds of your journey and then getting off at dubai to stretch your legs before the final third !

I am on a silver status with thai air,as faulty says its free and costs me nothing,on may last trip in february I used almost all my miles as half of them were about to expire < actually they had to expire in dec 2006 but members were given 6 more months to redeem them > so I got a free return ticket to phk, plus had the flight bkk-rome upgraded buz, it also gives 10 kilos bagage more and priority waiting list. never got the chance to be on gold status though.

An economy flight to BKK is about £500 ($1000) from London. A business flight is about £2000 ($4000). This is a huge, huge amount of money to spend in an airline ticket. Just think how the saved £1500 can improve your 2-week holiday. It's £100/$200/6500 baht PER DAY! And flying economy with a decent airline like Singapore/Thai/Cathay is no big deal anyway.
If your company doesn't pay it, it's not worth it.

matter is, if you fly 4 timesuk-bkk economy and you have a ffp card you can get an upgrade in buz, still paying 500£ this is worth eventhough it is you paying

but im not paying for a business ticket
thats my whole point
if i take 3 trips in a year to BKK on Cathay(my preferred destination) and the flight are, say, 300usd/avg over other flights. that is 900 extra dollars im spending
in those 3 flights, i will probably be upgraded at least once without using my miles
so for me that extra 900 usd is worth it

I pay for all my own tickets , and do not pay business class fares. I do usually end up in Business class for about 30% of my flights , either using frequent flyer miles to upgrade my ticket or by being upgraded by the airline.
If it's not costing me any more money , and I am getting a far superior service , why not !!!!!
On my next trip , I am using "miles" to upgrade my London - Dubai and Dubai - Bangkok flights , on the way back I reckon I've a 30% chance of being upgraded by Emirates on one of the two flights.

Its a pretty decent Frequent flyer programme, loads of partner airlines to get miles on. I think it is only 10k miles to get silver card. UK BKK and back. 50k for gold. They give you a free round trip upgrade when you qualify for that. I try to save mine for a UK Australia trip. You get more luggage etc etc A really great thing with TG gold card is a gauranteed seat even when the flight is full over booked closed, if you book 3 days before and your ticket is M class or higher.
If you had not already joined I would have suggested you joined BMI frequent flyer programme only 30 K miles for Gold, but you can use it on Star Allaince airlines like Thai. same benefits more or less but less miles.
But if you can make the 50k miles in a year Jan - December or 80 k over 2 years Thai card is better.
On Thai when they are upgrading in Thailand usually they will not give you an upgrade if you are wearing Jeans. I know this for a fact I used to have a GF who works for TG in the Lounge.

just in case you don't know george, from now on anytime you fly thai,or star alliance do always keep all the boarding cards, you may need them later if the miles you gain are not shown on your statement <you may need to send them to the nearest office> I have done it 3 times already
