Where do ex-pats live?
Are there any specific ex-pat "areas" in Patong?
I'm looking for an apartment for 6 months and am having difficulty finding areas where they may have larger than average concentrations of farangs.
Anyone got any recommendations on where I should concentrate my search, bearing in mind i'm looking for somewhere reasonably cheap? I don't mind walking, so it doesn't have to be in the centre. I'm not too keen on walking on the roads though, particularly when pissed, so if there's an area where there's pavements all the way...
Also, can anyone explain the difference between rooms for rent, condos and apartments, specifically in terms of joiner fees, management fees, bills etc?

Patong is pretty much an expat zone all over.. The only 'thai only' areas I can think of would be the BG rooms and the tin shack shanty towns.. Nanai Rd is a more resident expat or long stay tourist versus short stay holiday area.. It will also be cheaper the further away from bangla and beach Rd you get.
Rooms / condos or apartments.. anything rented long term (weekly / monthly) would be joiner fee free.. Its pretty much just hotel accomodation that has this issue.

How much you looking to pay and what level of accomodation do you need?
A friend is moving out of a one bedroom bedsit, cost 7k per mth plus electricity and TV, know of a one bed bedsit on Nanai at 8k, a one bedroom and two bedroom on Sai Nam Yen at 6.5 & 9K and maybe a dump on Soi Duncan (okay we call it soi Duncan think it is Dub Perng?) no pavement on that road nor tarmac but apartment is only 3.5k) ah no good thai mainly, forgot you wanted farangsters.
Havn't looked in ages for anything better than basic places as described, that new development where Mike and Marcie moved to off Nanai was very farangish and they got a nice three bed house for 25K, furniture a little sparse but tidy, clean and nice area.
Viking meet up with Lil or one of us in MTB and we can arrange to show you about a bit or at least point you in the right direction.

Dodger, your reply to Viking was a good one..........Till the last paragraph.
The Viking should take warning about meeting guys like you & Lil in bars.
Point the guy in the right direction huh?...........More like pointing at the bell 555555
On a serious note..........That's a good offer from you, to help out a bm.

I had in mind a furnished one bed apartment, that needs to be comfortable and secure. Internet access and cable would be nice, but not essential. Looking to pay around 10k, although obviously cheaper the better.
Will call in to the bar tonight with luck.

As long as your thinking internet and TV being bills on top.. And its for long term.. you should squeek by.. Certainly it wont be too easy in Patong to get 'nice' at that price (furnishings, location, etc) but it is just about possible.
Outside of Patong it should be easier..

There's apartments available above me. Very quiet culdesac up a steep hill above Nanai road....south end. Getting towards low season, if you committed to 6 months probably be 12000baht a month, maybe a bit less and the owner would probably throw in a motorbike for 1500 a month if you wanted one. Cleaned and towels replaced almost every day. Think the "Penthouse" on top floor might be available but more money.
PM me if you want my mobile no.

Thanks Livin, have PMed him.
IJ, staying in apartments is a bit different to hotels. Some don't have cleaning at all. Where I am they clean most days but occasionally miss one. No big deal....we get plenty of towels

I used to stay at Orcella 2 just up from Bamboo Club on Nanai (PM me for details or just Google).
Most apts are 2-bedroom, but they do have 1-bedroom apts as well. Daily cleaning is not included, but can be arranged with the owners for a nominal fee. Also cheap motorbike rental. 12,000 bht for the 1-bedroom (at least it used to be).
