Lousy timing and bait & switch pricing ("Free" or 39 RM). With all the junk fees and the 700 baht departure ransom and similar Malysian rip-off airport tax it gets quite expensive, about 100 Euro each way. And due to the unfortunate schedule you'll end up spending 2 nights in Penang at about 1000 baht each.
Until they have an early morning flight from HKT, and a late afternoon departure from Penang I'm better off taking buses via HatYai.
Just wish there was a ferry/cruiseship Phuket-Lankawi-Penang. But getting one going takes too much creativity, the usual tourist operators only push the same old stuff: hotels, airplanes and buses. Since nobody seems to read trade papers here they don't know that cruise ship tourism is the only growth sector in the biz....
Why does Andaman Club not put their gambling ship back into service?
Note: Carnival Cruises has a 2x weekly 2 day cruise from LA to Ensenada (BC, Mexico, ~ 160 nautical miles) often used by visa runners for ~USD 75. Quite successful. Cruise, eat, gamble, sleep, get your passport stamped in San Pedro and back to work/school Monday morning.
