£9.95 card fee plus £4.95 per month or £1 per transaction...I think if using it for holidays it's better to wait till the last minute before getting the card, certainly cheaper than getting charged for a withdrawal every day!

Look guys if there is a need for a deposit to be paid on the rooms, why not get a bank cheque made out in Thai Baht from you own bank and send it via registered post or by fed express courier (or similar).
That way no one has to divulge card no's over the phone or anything like that.
Just to let you know I have a credit card merchant system and can take cards over the phone for payment of goods.
By choosing to do that, I take the risk that the card number that the client gives me is their own and not stolen etc.
If that happens and I recieve payment from a stolen card, the money is straight away taken from my account and returned to the clients account. These days a lot of businesses have shyed away from this form of business because of the risks in the use of stolen cards etc.
It may pay to speak to the owner and get him to either set up a secure payment form on his site or to accept payment via Paypal.
That would solve a lot of his problems as most people use Paypal for secure online purchases via the internet.

I think you are making this a bigger deal than it is.

You answered the question right there .... little risk to the consumer (the one booking a hotel room).

The only hotels I have given credit card details to are one's with a secure
web-site.
It seems a lot of trouble trying to book somewhere & you can't enter CC details on the web-site.

I echo devman's comment. Whenever I book online I always feel more comfortable with a website that uses a merchant (like thaiepay). I recently booked a hotel in soi sansabi and paid online through thaiepay.

Also would be possible to put your CC details into a zip file.. Password protect the zip.. Send it via email then call and let them know the pass..
Simple easy and keeps everyone happy.

Thanks to the people who have offered their advice , in the end it's up to the individual as to how comfortable they are sending their card number through email . You may get your money back in any case , you may not get it back - it's all up to the bank itself - my bank (and most other australian bastard banks including my mates) have a dispute process that could take months to settle and even then the final result won't necessarily be 100% in your favour if they figure out that you've been a dill with your card number .
Splitting the numbers up is certainly one way to solve the problem as has been suggested .
I just wanna say that Bill has been very gracious in trying to sort the matter out and as always has bent over backwards to satisfy a customer and that is why the Summer Breeze is one of if not the best place to stay in Patong .
However I don't blame my friend for being cautious , credit card fraud and hacking is rampant ..... and I'm pretty sure that the SB website was hacked only a few months ago so that certainly didn't help his mindset .

Have just returned from Patong after staying in another hotel besides the Summer Breeze , this place is also in Soi Sansabai and made me realise how great the Summer Breeze is .
The staff at this other place were nowhere near as friendly , the rooms were seemingly infested with mosquitos and the cleaning staff seemed fit to bang on the door at midday and ask for an immediate decision as to whether you want your room cleaned or not .
That was the 1st and last time that I ever stay anywhere else .
The old motto of if you find a good place stick to it certainly rings true when it comes to the Summer Breeze .

Didn't really wanna name it cos my post was more about praising the Summer Breeze rather than bag the other place .
It was the Yorkshire Inn , still reasonable enough to stay in (if you train your overnight guest to kill the mosquitos during her spare time) but nowhere near as good as the SB ......just no comparison between them in my book .
