LAX to BKK Nonstop
Just booked a flight from LAX to BKK Nonstop on ThaiAir for next week. I have to book a round trip on SouthWest to the Bay Area but that is a piece of cake rather than flying to Hong Kong or Taipai and changing planes. Seventeen hours isn't bad. That's the longest nonstop flight I've ever had.
ThaiAir also a great promotion where you can fly to three cities for $169. I'm off to Chaing Mai for a few days then on to Phuket and back to BKK. Such a deal!
Sounds like the surfs up in Phuket. Looking forward to it, to say the least.

17 hour flight
Last fall I took the 17 hour flight from NYC to Bangkok on Thai Air. That's a long flight. I think I like the deal better where you fly 12 hours to Japan and then get out and walk around for an hour or so before taking the final leg to Bangkok.

it wasnt bad at all and although you are on the plane for a long time all at once you do notice the difference in the total time you save

Pinot,
I've done that LAX to BKK flight and you want to make sure you have an aisle seat so you can keep your legs stretched out. Thai Air has a Premium Economy section for about a $200 upgrade that seems like a bargain for a 17-hour flight! (Details from their website.)
Purchase an economy class ticket from Los Angeles to Bangkok or New York/JFK to Bangkok and travel in style.
For just USD199* additional one-way, you can experience THAI's newest innovation in their legendary Smooth As Silk service. THAI's Premium Economy Clas introduces a new era in Premium travel, with 42 inches of space between seats, a recline angle of 135 degrees and an individually customizable entertainment system.

I'll be departing LAX to BKK on EVA Airlines [transit point is Taipei] next week as well - I saw that Thai Air flight but I believe the fare difference was so significant I reasoned an extra 4 hours was worth the cheaper fare. I believe it was around 500-600 cheaper, but I really can't remember.
One major piece of advice though - look at Bangkok Airways as another option for the Discovery Airpass. Its the same price, maybe cheaper. Also note the airport Thai Air [Domestic] will be departing - I chose Bangkok Air because they are the only carrier flying into Koh Samui and they leave from the same airport I'll be flying back to the states...the new one. Make sure you take note if you have connections to make! HF!!!

I cant remember exactly what the airfare was for LAX-BKK. $1170? Something like that. I know about the upgrade. I couldn't get it because of the wrong Internet classifiication? They suggested I check again at the gate.
ThaiAir does have direct flights between Chaing Mai and Phuket running daily. Also being able to check the baggage through at LAX is a plus.

I just returned home (about 11 hrs ago) on Thai Airways nonstop BKK/LAX. Flight time (eastbound), was 14:35. The westbound leg (LAX/BKK) is considerably longer...headwinds. I've used this flight 6 or 7 times, since it's inception in Dec 05. The longest flight ws 18:48....JEEEZZZUZZ!
Despite the long flight time, I prefer the nonstop, to a stopover in Osaka...
The premium economy seat is vastly better than a regular economy seat. The extra $250, is well spent for this upgrade. I don't find that much difference between it, and their business class. Seats not that much better in Biz...and the service (food, drinks, SERVICE) sucks, in all cabins. The extra $3000 is a waste...for business class!
When I say the service sucks....I mean, the food is generally crap. The wine, champagne, and appertifs, are sub standard...as compared to say, Singapore Airlines. And once the flight attendants toss you your meal, it's a race to get it cleaned up....so they can turn the lights down, and go sit on their butt's for 4 or 5 hours. Really, I've timed it....once, I didn't see a F/A walk through my section, in over 3 hours. Oh well, for $1450 round trip (and nonstop)...I guess it's OK.

Somewhat on the same subject M26...
As I stated in my last post, I just returned on TG, from BKK/LAX.
The fact that the flight leaves BKK at 7:40PM, and scheduled arrival at LAX is 9:15PM...makes it nearly impossible for most connecting flights. (unless you're taking a red-eye, to back east) I wish that Thai Air would revamp their scheduled departure from BKK, to say 5:30PM.
As my flight last evening was short (shorter than scheduled), I had a chance to make the last Southwest flight from LAX/LAS. Thai Air 794 blocked into the (remote gate), at 8:14PM. Being early...the scheduled (terminal) gate, was still occupied. (good news/bad news)
The last flight (Southwest) to Las Vegas departs at 9:45. United has a later flight at 10:45, but was oversold.
Alas, with an early arrival, I have a chance at Southwest....No way!
For the third time in a row, I've been hassled by US Customs, upon arrival!
Ever since that "faggot-pedo" Kerr, (or whatever his name was) confessed to killing the Ramsey girl in Colorado...(thus putting Thailand big time, on the map), I've been picked out for special inspection upon arrival. They must "profile" adult men, traveling alone to/from Thailand.
Last time, the customs officer looked through my digi-camera, at about 200 photos. Last night, the customs officer, looked through my photos, then spent 15 minutes on my laptop computer! WTF!!! I asked him, if I could help him find something...but he then became irritable. Then, after going through every thing I had...he spent 15 minutes on (HIS) computer, with my passport!
Finally, after 50 minutes of BS...he smiled happily and said, "Thank you Mr.*****, you may go now", as he returned my passport!
No chance for a flight home...I rented a car and drove for 4:15, arriving at my house around 3:30!
Oh well....Had a good tour, anyway...55555

from cathay pacific.
. Gotta go through their website and ticket must be purchased before May 31. Good for departure dates of Sept.1 through Nov. 30, 2007.
$734, plus taxes from Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York. Also includes Phuket if that is your destination.

They must stop in Hong Kong, me thinks....Johnny????
Last I checked, (before songkran tour)...you couldn't make it to LOS from LAX, without an overnight in SIN (Singapore Air).
Didn't check Cathay though...very good price, if the itinerary is liveable.

Gees Pablo you really took the wind out of my sails. Flying BKK to LAX on Sunday in business class and have to catch a connecting flight back East at 1020pm. I gather from your report I might not make my flight, which means losing an entire day, as the next flight out isn’t till 7am. Hope I find a more sympathetic customs officer as I’m only in transit

I guess I was very lucky. After reading this forum I expected to be delayed at LAX customs, but surpisingly they only x-rayed my luggage, which they were doing to about 50% of the people, and never looked at a camera or computer. This may have something to do with the fact it was my first time to LOS. The next time may be different.

I have arrived into the US 8 times with Thailand being on the arrival card ... never had any problems. One time, though, an imigration officer asked me how my trip was and as part of my comment I said that you get a lot of good food over there. He replied with a big grin and said: "I am sure that is not all you get in Thailand - have a nice day".

I went thru LAX on my trip back May of 2006. Sure enough, only reason I was picked was because I'm single old white male. Wanted to see all my camera pics also. Which was ok, I didn't know how to look at them till he showed my how. New to digital I am.

Flying through is a pain as there is no such thing as international transit. On the other hand flying within the US is easier than any where in the world (I think I can say this because I have traveled in most regions in the world).

Well just arrived back in Canada from my flight on Thai 794 from BKK to LAX. I was flying from Phuket to L.A. with Thai and then Air Canada back to Toronto. Checked my bags through to Toronto and confirmed they were checked right through.
After a nice 3.5hour layover at BKK in the Royal Orchid Lounge, walked a short way to the gate and was met with a mass of security screeners…included was a physical patdown (not by a pretty Thai Girl) and then a complete inspection of everything in my carry on. This was happening to everyone. I was in business class with no one beside me. The flight was great, attentive staff, good food, great seat…etc….very pleasant flight considering it was 15.5 hours.
Landing a LAX…Touchdown 855pm about 15 minutes ahead of schedule…however shortly thereafter stopped on the taxi way and an announcement by the captain say’s our gate is still occupied. Now I have a 1030 flight out of terminal 2. At 935pm, pull up to gate but did not turn in, shut off engines and wait for a tow. (Noticed fire trucks and ambulance at our gate) At 940pm in gate, but we are told to stay seated until cleared by the World Health Organization W.T.F!!! Firemen and Paramedics board walk to the back and out again in 5 minutes? 945pm…I’m first off the plane and at the far end of Tom Bradley Terminal….hit customs…played dumb and went to a U.S. resident agent and was asked a few pointed questions…like why were you in Thailand alone? (No computer or camera inspection) Anyways ask him how long will it take me to get to terminal 2….he say 15 minutes as long as that’s your only bag. (Carry-on) No I say, my other bag is checked through to Toronto. No he says all bags have to be collected and cleared. Ok by 1005pm I have my bag and am racing out the door…guess what the transfer belt collector won’t take my bag and tells me to hoof it to terminal 2 and check it there. Flat out run and at 1020pm standing at Air Canada in terminal 2 and being told…to bad flight is closed. She makes a phone call….I’m S.O.L….she say’s call reservation and rebook another flight tomorrow….No way I say she should do that for me….it’s not my fault. I say hey I’m flying executive class that should count for something. Anyway’s she say’s you are checked in right …and makes another call to a friend at the gate….they will hold the plane!!!!!! She say’s follow me and at a flat out pace runs me to the security screens machines and convinces the operator to put my bag right through…(not sure how many people I knocked over )then a flat out run to the gates…Oh no 40 people in front of me at security…I duck under the tape and push to the front screaming my plane is being held for me….shoes off, belt off and lap top pulled out. Through security in 4 minutes…now a flat out run to the gate, hearing my name being paged. At 1040pm..on the plane and buffing, sweating and ready to have a heart attack. Door closes behind me!
Arrive in Toronto this morning…guess what no bag…still in LA…..
Never again will I connect through the U.S. again if I can help it.

Pablo, the same thing happened to me two visits ago. Last time they waived me right through with no inspection of anything. It is the luck of the draw I'm afraid.
I do have to spend the night in LA because there is no connecting flights to the BayArea at that ime. You're right about the timing.
I'm off tomorrow night for LOS.
