Renting Bicycles

Anyone know a good place to rent bicycles in patong?

I'm looking for a half decent mountain bike nothing to fancy just for riding to nearby beaches and so on.

Wink Bike

Hi

You can buy them from Tesco Lotus or BIG C for about 1000 to 2000 baht. They have lots of styles and are great value.

When I was in Phuket I tried to find a decent bike to rent with no luck at all. Your best bet is to buy something and maybe sell it to an expat when you leave if there is any interest.

Good mountain bike in Big C about 6 to 7,000bht, good idea buy one or two whilst here on holiday then sell it/them to me when you leave. I want a bike(s) but am too lazy to go to Big C and buy one!!

I would suggest changing you bike everyday too to avoid high Long Term maintenance costs.

After a while they start squeaking and need new chains..

Wink Sports World Jungceylon

I am just reading the Phuket Gazette and there is an advert for Sports World which is on the ground floor, and they have bikes in there for sale. Mongoose Mountain Bikes 6,900 baht.

They also have the basic bike for 1,900.

Might be worth a look to see what other bikes they have.

Regards

Drew

Thanks guys good advice there. I have three options then

1. Buy a cheap one and leave it there.
2. Buy a decent one then sell it on to an expat.
3. Rent one.

I'm only there for 10 days so I think I'll go for no 1 ?

4 find an expat that has one and loan it..

My brother has one here but I cant offer it.. Its too special to him (pace frame, all the trickest bits, think 5k or so in total) and not mine to loan.

I have never seen a MTB rental arrangement for good ones.. Tho if I was to look I would try Montes resturant that does some kind of riding club.

Wasn't that the one you were trying to sell in another bicycle thread. I recall it needed a lot of work, including new tires - or am I mistaken.

I certainly wouldnt have been selling my bros trick bike.. Theres a beater bike he bought before he had that shipped out, I may have offered that on loan ? Tho to be honest the beater bike has been unloved and looks rusty and in need of TLC. Would be better off buying a cheapie than the work of fixing that up I reckon.

Or maybe thats confusing with the CBR motorbike I sold ??

That could be. Just remember a "bike" in less than good condition.

Not sure, as that also doesnt really fit the CBR (needed a new front tyre but overall was really well maintained).. BM Honda Hunter bought it in the end (it was a Honda after all ) and to the best of my knowledge was happy with it..

Another idea would be to contact the hash cycling group.. Perhaps a hash member would have a spare or even be happy to rent, loan a bike.. At least it plugs you into the MTB community here.

Having looked into it a bit more the cheap bikes look OK for a young girl and the rental bikes are the same price as a Motorbike. I'm undecided again, was hoping for something around 100 baht a day?

My bro has moved bikes on flights a few times.. But he has some 'bike boxes' he had (you can get them from bike shops) and removes the wheels and twists the bars.. Kinda like flat packing it.

Hes just sold the 5 year old pace frame for 1000 USD !!! And building a new carbon one..

Theres a bike shop in Kamala that looks like a rental place with OK / mid end MTB's. Theres also one on the Karon / Kata back Rd to Chalong.

As mentioned there is Beach Boy Bikes on the back/main road between Kata and Karon .. they used to rent.
Personally I would buy and ask a mate to keep it for when I return,(and believe me, my friend, you will return) .. but there again money is no object for me !!

Ride a bike on these roads and streets? You've got more guts than me. With all the accidents I see I want a little more protection.

You do get bike travel bags.. Disassemble and pack in the bag for travel.
You would need to up your luggage weight allowance tho.
