from bangkok by car you can take a taxi or Limo transfer 2-3 hours to Hua Hin. i think 1500-2000 bath
Another option is flying. Bangkok Airways fly daily from Bangkok to Hua Hin. Departure time is 8am, arrival time is 8.40am, the regular fare is 1.500 THB (one way). But as you will have to get to the airport in Bangkok first and to downtown Hua Hin later, this option won’t save you any time or money against a taxi-ride. And it’s far less flexible because you have to stick to Bangkok Airways schedule, which very well might be different from your own one
Flights operate from Hua Hin to Koh Samui with connections to Phuket .
OBS: i dont now the latest uppdate for this
airfield suspended commercial flight operation three years ago to extend the runway across the Hua Hin Cha Am road.but are nowFinally the airfield has re-opened but at present no commercial airlines are landing there.
Bangkok Airways were all set to resume their flights as part of their summer schedule. A one way fare of Baht 1,500 was filed with the Department of Aviation but according to a spokeswoman for the airline there has been no response from DOA and the schedule was dropped. If the fare can be agreed there is a possibility that they may fly Bangkok to Hua Hin and the onto Koh Samui and return.

If I were you i would go Hua Hin first and then Phuket.
I will arrive at Christmas in BKK and stay there 2 or 3 days. Then I will go via Nakhon Pathom (Bus) to Hua hin (train) and stay there 2 days before I go with the bus to Phuket.
You can also take the nighttrain (very nice) to Surat thani and then the Bus to Phuket.
I'm sure you can try this route also in the opposite direction. But I never tried. But this direction BKK - HH - Phuket i made once and will do it again end of this year.
I would not use a car. Because there are better and safer possibilities to use.

transport tohua hin
Thanks to all for your quick responses to our query
patong boy....we don't mind if we go to phukett or hua hin first. We arrive on the 24th dec and leave on the 10th jan. We are booked into nana hotel bkk for first 2 nights and the last 3. we will share the remaining days betweeen hua hin and phukett. You say you are getting the bus from hua hin to phukett,do you know if it is a regular service or do we have to book in advance? Our order of travel will be to suit the hotel availability.can anyone suggest any hotels,we know there are loads on the web but we would prefer a recommendation, would that be in a different thread?
many thanks dave & julie

I never recommend anyone take the bus in Thailand, have done it too many times myself on various trips.
In this case I would take the train down Hua Hin, and then train back to Bangkok and fly down to Phuket. This assumes of course that PG isn't again flying Hua Hin to Koh Samui, then you could fly Hua Hin/Samui/Phuket.

I would take the bus. E.g. Bus from Bangkok to Hua Hin and then bus from Hua Hin to Phuket and then a cheap Air Asia flight back to Bangkok.
There are buses every hour on this route I think.

hey davie and julie
seems we arrive at the same day in BKK. Who knows, maybe we are sitting in the same train when we get down to Huahin :p
For Thailand I never book in advance. But thats a personal thing for each person. There are lots of travel agencies and you can just book the bus the day before you go and then it will be ok i think.
For accomodation in HH i recommend: www.jinningbeachguesthouse.com
Nice and always very friendly staff.
If you have question you can contact me via private message.

transport to hua hin
What a nice, helpful and kind group of people you all are.
Nicke....... that's just what we were thinking, thanks to all who suggested flying, when go on holiday we like to use ground transport if possible,we think it gives a better feel to the place.
Patong Boy......
It is indeed a coincidence that we land on the same day in bkk. here is another one, in christmas 2002 we stayed at jinning's beach for a week as well!!!!!. We stayed in the older building opposite the reception, really liked it and will go again if we can get in. We have forgotten the name of the man who owned it can you remember? I think he was from Sweden or Norway.
If we meet on the train we will buy you a drink and say hello!
Thanks Everyone for your help

Hi Dave & Julie,
Last week I got a taxi from Don Muang airport to Cha-am (approx 20km from Hua-Hin, I think). It was 2800 baht return. That's the official SAFE service. It takes exactly 2 hours.
I can't be bothered arguing these days as the exchange rate is so much in out favour. (It used to be around 38 baht to the pound sterling!)
Plus you get the airport guarantee and receipts.
Hope you have a great holiday
driv.
ps - I have flown to Hua-Hin in the past, there's barely enough time for them to throw a sandwich at you before you land I thought that the flights stopped quite a few years ago though.

Reason: forgot the flights

Hi Driv
I would of thought by the time you got to the airport and checked in etc, that Bkk to Hua Hin was quicker by car! You get a better view too. Have you been to Phukett? do you know what it's like compared to Hua Hin?
Cheers...... Dave & Julie

Hi again,
Phuket and HuaHin really can't be compared. They are so very different.
Phuket has a dozen or more beaches and has an enormous amount of tourism.
Most people, when they think of Phuket - really they are thinking Patong Beach. And I guess most of those don't venture out of Patong other than maybe for a quick drive down to Laem PromThep or a boat ride to James Bond Island Phuket has a wild 'social' scene and hundreds of bars and restaurants. It's usually very busy there.
HuaHin is much quieter - or at least it used to be. I haven't been there for a number of years now. I prefer Cha-Am - but having said that I should mention that there is almost nothing to do there (n Cha-Am). I usually go as a sort of enforced holiday away from technology and the world.
Great for lying on a beach and having nobody bother you....

Last time I went to Cha-am I stayed for just an hour or so. It was quiet overthere and not much to do but that was oke for me until a bunch of young male tourists hit the beach there with alot of noise. Looked at them for about fifteen minutes and then I was out of there to Hua-Hin. They were playing some games like pulling each others shorts down and then put sand in the a-hole. At first it seemed like some jokes they were doing to each other until they got really in the x-rated scenes with each others. I can tell you lots of people weren`t that amused to see it happen and left.

Never seen anything like that mate.
In fact I hardly ever see any Westerners where I go.
It's usually only Thais (and then only on the weekend).

Thanks everyone for all your input,
Driv.... we stayed in Hua Hin christmas 2002, hired a moped and went to Cha am really scary (the moped that is!) thought cha am was nice though.Like you say very quiet. I think you have the best of both worlds really with Cha am and Hua Hin, both contrast and compliment each other. We will still go to Phuket but split our time 1/3 Phuket and 2/3 Hua Hin. Like you we like some nightlife, but not too much in your face. Thanks for your advice.
Beuk..... are you trying to get more people to Cha am? porn shows on the beach eh!
Anyone got any hotel recommends yet in Phukett please.
Thanks to all for your help really appreciate it.
Dave & Julie
