C&N vs. ExPat?

After reading some posts here, I’m thinking of reserving a room at either the C&N or ExPat for my LoS trip this August. Does anyone have any input about the quality of rooms there? Double vs. VIP vs. Family-size rooms? Is the top floor too hot in August to consider? It’s been a long time since I’ve been there. How does C&N compare to the ExPat? I remember the ExPat as being very friendly to guests, but rather Spartan rooms. Still true? I like being right in the middle of things.

Asfar as being right in the middle of things I found the C&N great. Staff were friendly, hotel was GF, rooms about the equivalent of a 3 star hotel, clean tidy, hot water was a bit unreliable and cheap as chips. Room size for a standard double was bigger than average and I had a balcony so that I could see the massage ladies from two shops without having to get off my back side. Sorry I cant comment on the expat, never styayed there.

Expat has a pool whereas C&N does not. Expat is currently doing room renovations so could be better than C&N by the time you come to stay.

I'd say Expat is more family friendly and C&N is more a good quality crash pad kind of hotel.

You may also like to consider the BM owned Summer Breeze Hotel - click on banner ad to the right of this message.

Would also note about Expat is that is the Phuket Hash House Harrier Hotel of choice as the weekly Saturday Hash run bus depart from this hotel (3PM).

The Expat also charges almost twice as much as C&N for their rooms, they use the swimming pool as an excuse, also their 24hour coffee shop/restaurant closes at 11pm as does reception, so if you stagger back from town in the wee hours and fancy a bite or a coffee then your out of luck. Or need to access your safety box then your stuffed until 7am. Not good if you want to come back at midnight to pick up some more dosh. C&N's reception is 24Hr

All good points. Thanks. I didn't realize ExPat coffee shop closed at 11pm. Although not surprising during low season, I suspect. Leaning towards C&N. I've heard they have a reciprical agreement w/someplace for pool usage.

Any thoughts or comments on C&N's Double vs. VIP rooms? Cost not a huge issue for me, but comfort is. Is it better to be on a higher floor to cut down on noise? Or are higher floors just too hot in August, even with air con? I assume C&N has an elevator.

Thought about Summer Breeze, but I was planning on using American Express, which they don't take. No mention of a pool there, either.

I've stayed at Expat three times. Love the pool, the landscaping and outdoor porch/patio areas. Restaurant is OK, not great. Staff is OK, not great. No free wifi, and cannot pick up a free signal from elsewhere.

I haven't seen the renovated rooms, but the old ones are Spartan to put it mildly. Beds are not only hard, but lumpy, as well. TV is ridiculous unless you are fond of Thai soaps, because you get little else, except BBC and one soccer games channel. Also no friggin' remote control to change channels on the tiny TV. Toilets always seem to leak. Hot water was OK, though.

I met the owner/manager this year. Quite the rude bastard. Don't know if I would stay there again. Was charged double this year of what I paid 2 years ago. I tried to get into Palm View Resort this year, a much nicer hotel for less money, but they were all booked, so I ended up at Expat again. It is a great location, though.

One other drawback: If you are on the upper floors, the booming bass speakers from Tai Pan make it near impossible to retire early should you decide to take a night off the piss. Quite loud. Not so bad if you are on the ground floor.

You can use the pool at the C&N Resort (as opposed to C&N Hotel) but it is not walking distance - you would need a bike or tuk tuk.

Summer Breeze doesnt have pool on premises, but they give you free tickets to use at Baan Benjamin pool which is only about 50 metres walk.

C&N has elevator. Its VIP rooms are scarce - I think only 4 in total?? It is a big hotel, where as Summer Breeze has a more "homely" feel, more personalised feel.

Faulty Towers next door to Expat have free WiFi, drop in for food, beer or coffee and use WiFi for free.

Last time in LOS, 1-11 June, I tried Summer Breeze, very nice place.
Summer Breeze also charge you extra for WiFi, but I just bring my laptop with me to Faulty Towers.

Nada...Wi Fi is free at the Summerbreeze...unless Bill found a new revenue stream lately.

My only comment on Soi Sunset (Expat / Faulty's) is it's friggen dark walking up that street at night. Needs a few street lights.

Try Patong Beach Lodge where my wife and I stayed. Great pool, great breakfast, great room and the place is open 24 hours a day. right in the middle of the action opposite Christins Massage you can't go wrong.
The safe is also accesible 24 hours as well. We had a great time and the price is cheap. Owned by the same people as Horizon down near Beach Road.
Just ask for a room with a balcony overlooking the pool and you will have no problem. They have some rooms without windows ( not recommended ).
Try the room we stayed in number 502. Lifts are quick and facilities great.

Regards

DB

I was there during high season. Restaurant closed at 11:00, opened at 7:00. Used to be open 24 hours, but not any more.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. I went ahead and booked a VIP room at C&N. I'm sure from all this information and feedback I've received here that it'll be just fine.

I owe all of you a beer at the MTB when I get there in August. Thanks again for your help.

I like the Expat Hotel. The pool area is great and the staff is very friendly. The owner can be a bit grump thou..hehe. Maybe becuse I am not from the UK, dunno, don't really care. The rooms used to be very simple, that is ok with me thou, dont spend much time in there.

Regardig wifi, I picked up a signal ín my room on the 2nd floor, not the hotels wifi so guess you can't rely on that but worked out great for me. Oterwise just do what ST66 says; go to Faulty Towers next door, good food and friendly owner.

Anyway, anyone stayed at Expat after they got the rooms/pool area done and can leave a report?

VIP room at C&N is an excellent choice, Virtual Guy. I have stayed at this hotel the last 10 times in Patong and I am very satisfied. They have only two VIP rooms in the hotel so you very lucky getting one of them. Enjoy!

Their website says 4 VIP suites, but I specifically reserved the one on the top floor to cut down on the noise level. Although I don't plan to spend a lot of time in my room, I'm looking forward to it being "quality time" . :-)

Ok, if you reserved at the C&N hotel and not the resort they have three VIP rooms. One of the rooms are always occupied by the owner of the hotel so two are available for rent. If you have the top floor you can look forward to a nice stay in room 422 :-) Even though you do not plan to spend a lot of time in your room it is a nice room when you are there... :-) Good luck!
