Thais who rent out accomodation
I thought I would write about an experience I just had and you could tell me if Im going to expect this the whole time in Thailand.
I saw an add for a rental property in the Phuket Gazette (Phuket Property for Rent - RAWAI BEACH STUDIO, online English newspaper for Phuket, Thailand, with daily news, classified ads, yellow pages, business listings, upcoming events, event calendar, phuket events ). I called the owner as it has very limited information. I asked if it was possible to email me a few pictures of the property. Below is our conversation: Me: Hi, im calling from Australia and was interested in renting your property for the whole month of August. Could you be so kind and email me a picture Him: NO! If i walk there I charge you BHT 2000. Me: Ok, is it very far from where you live? Him: you are rich, this is for people with no money, Im not going to rent to you, when you come to Thailand you stay in hotel for 1000BHT a night. She will decide for you, when you come. Me: She will decide? Who is she? Him: Your wife Me: Im coming alone and how do you know if i am rich Him: I do not rent to you, you get hotel me: why are you being so rude? All i want to know is if you can email a picture? Him: you go with her and get hotel for 1000BHT per night, you no stay here beep beep beep....... (phone hangs up) Ok guys? What the hell happened in t at conversation that mad him such an asshole?

Maybe that was aimed for locals and not for tourists? Anyway, 4500 baht month including ADSL and UBC is very cheap.
Maybe he become rude when you asked for photos, as he maybe think you expect a nice hotel room standard, which may not be the case.

Probably just caught them on a bad day..
But your calling long term accomodation and asking about a holiday rental.. In a language they may not be good at.. They probably just wanted nothing to do with you. Of course its probable they also had a strong anti farang chip on thier shoulder, its getting more common.

Guess he doesn't like Australians! Obviously he's looking for a long term tenant and is not interested in a monthly rental....Funny story though. I just gave him a call and he's emailing me a picture....I will forward it on

as LIL said.....the guy wants a long term tenant not a holidayer....he's probably sick of being asked the same question day in day out
could get then same response from a farang in farangland on the wrong day

You should have called him the day before Australia thumped Thailand 4-0 in the soccer/football.
He probably had 500 Baht on the Thais at 7/1.

So what does monthly rental mean to you ??
Its obvious its not for the week ?? Or even weeks.. If giving a monthly price they are looking for tenants that will stay multiple months.

Wasnt slating the OP.. I said the TG was probably anti farang anyway. I just think seafox's comment that it doesnt say long term rental doesnt make sense when the OP states the guy wanted to rent it on a monthly basis only.

If the renter was so anti-farang...why would the advertisement be in a farang newspaper?
The fact that the conversation seemed to go away from the original tangent suggests to me that he thought he was speaking to someone else. Why mention the wife ?

Well tell me if im wrong..
if it says monthly at 4500BHT, that doesnt apply just to long term renters. I would see it as if its free for the month of August I would like to rent it for that month and give you 4500BHT. Oh well, its all done and dusted. Ill be more picky when calling for alternate accomodation..
