Car Rental
I will be staying in the south of the Island near Rawai,, can anyone reccomend a car rental company, that is reputable. Will be there for 2 weeks so would like to get a car.
Also. what are opinion's about renting a Jeep?
Is it safe to park in Patong without getting vehicle stolen or items.
thanks in advance for the advice!

Use a reputable company like Budget or Hertz. Also, inspect the car for any damage before taking it away, and point any marks or scratches out to them as well. Take a photo too.
If you take the same precautions as back home, (valuables out of sight, make sure its locked, etc) Patong is no worse than anywhere else for theft from cars.
Can't help you with jeeps, but I think all companies below hire them out.

When I rented a car in April from Avis it was only available with a full CDW, which was a good thing. It negates the issue of being liable for small scratches and dents. Remember that outside of the US the car rental companies tend to inspect the return cars to no end. Also, keep in mind that you will be driving on the left side of the road. Not difficult (I think), however, a moment of not paying attention could put you at a bit higher risk. Again (as Dawsey said) a reputable company with full CDW is a must. As for theft, I am not sure if the CDW covers, however, paying with certain US credit cards gives you that coverage. With my American Express I am covered for both CDW and theft. Check with your credit card company and get the details.

Good advice, thanks. I have heard about quite afew people having to pay for scratches, dents, etc. that were most likely on the car when rented.
You are right about paying attention,, driving on the left will be a first for me,, better keep my wits about me!! I plan on renting from a major rental firm, Hertz, Avis etc. I suppose that these companies have full CDW???
Thanks, again

Budget rental, i just got a great deal from their special offers on the website, :: Budget Thailand :: Andaman special, seems the Thai resident thing was "forgotten", approx 4,000 Baht for a week instead of a heck of a lot more than that. You have to go in via the special offer page from the home page to get these deals. I use them all the time, full insurance, no hassles, collect from Patong Merlin can drop off airport if you wish. Last time someone had dented the car in the car park of my hotel, they did'nt care at all, just signed the paperwork and that was it.

I wanted to hire a compact to go from Pattaya to Prakorn Nakorn on my next visit to LOS.
Prices quoted from the Budget & Avis online calculator, including insurance in excess of 5,000 baht for one day.
It includes a penalty fee because I wouldn't be returning the car to the pick up point.
If you include fuel, it's very expensive.
Don't know how I'll be able to track down a good deal?

The only way to get a better deal is to return it to the same place you got it from.
Had the same problem myself and found flying was a much cheaper alternative.
Thats if there is an airport near where you want to go.

Why don't you hire a car with driver.
I know that some people charge 1500 per day plus petrol + hotel cost

Sounds a possibility worth exploring.
Prakorn Nakorn is about 650kms North East of Bangkok.
Coach from Pattaya to Bangkok, then another coach north east for two seems a drag.
I can also catch a sleeper train from Bangkok, but a rental would be simple except for the cost.
Do you have any references for drivers?

To find a parking space in evening in Patong 4 years ago was a frustrating experience, much worse with a car than a motorbike.
