When I fly between BKK and HKT I always buy business class on Thai as it only costs 1000 baht more than economy. The seats are obviously bigger and the service better, however, they do not serve alcoholic beverages. A business class seat also gives you access to the lounge if you arrive early to the airport.

Hi Jesper...
20,000 miles to upgrade seems kind of "expensive".
I think an upgrade to Royal Silk from LAX/BKK is 40,000 miles...(18 hr flight)?
For just another 1000 baht, it's worth the expense. But, I always spend the extra 1000 baht for BKK/HKT, and save the mileage points for longer range upgrades.
Enjoy your stay. (Are you at the SH hotel, as usual? Say Hi to all for me.)

Just as a sidenote to the thread...
A couple of weeks age, I received a renewal on my Thai Airways "Royal Orchid Plus", gold card. It seems that I have a "guzillion" mileage points stored away... And, have two (gold) "complimentary" upgrades available. NO miles subtracted, for these.
(Wow, I must have done some LOS trips, last year???) 5555
In checking the airfare's (LAX/BKK/LAX), I was surprised to see that the cheapest (economy) seat, is now priced at $1237 USD (R/T, tax incl.) This is around $200 higher (about 18%), than last years fare's!
That's about 2 "tug's" on the MTB (drink) bell, during "high season". 5555
Looks like the Thai baht strengthening (against the USD), takes it's toll...again!

I think the 20k mi. is for the ticket. As far as I remember a coach ticket is 15k mi, so the upgrade would have been 5k mi.
I redeemed a free ticket once for Royal Silk at it was approx 17k mi (discounted when redeemed on-line).

I never fly business on one hour flights.....I have a rule for me and my compnay that it must be an international flight over 5 hrs before any of us fly business....but I have no issue if someone wants to use their own points to upgrade....
If it was your only chance to get a ticket when it suited you fair enough....but I don't think it is worth the bht1000 extra for this short flight

As a company policy, where you otherwise have no control over spending, I would agree with you, especially since it is not necessary on short and medium haul to fly business class. In the company I work for you need to weigh the expense, regardless of flight duration.
On the other hand there are "deals" to be had and benefits to consider.
In my case I will pay up to 25% more to fly domestic with my preferred carrier as I then get upgraded to first class for free 95% of the time. When upgraded I will be working for the company on my computer and usually get a free meal.
Last time I flew from Ho Chi Minh to Bangkok the coach fare was $185 OW and business was $200 OW in Air France. Not a second thought as to what I bought. BTW this particular route is very cheap in Air France as they always fly with a mostly empty plane. Just checked US$410 RT Bus (with near "Lie-Flat" seats) / $243 RT Eco. Thai or Vietnam are US$650 RT eco.

Some of the BKK-HKT flights (and vv) have international seating configs, be sure to ask for a seat at the front and you never know, you may get a first class seat.

I used to do the BKK > HKT trip in business and pay the extra, just to get more miles (double) which meant the next trip LHR to LOS came about a tad quicker nothing whatsoever to do with me being a big lump and the seat being bigger

I once flew BKK > HKT with Thai Air in business and got row 1. When I turned up at the gate, there was a 747 parked outside and sure enough, I got a first class seat

I just flew Thai Business class from Phuket to Don Mueang. A quick review:
1. Took a taxi meter to the airport - if you are looking for a nice guy and not too crazy driver, here is the number for Wanchok 087-2768992
2. Arrived at airport and the lines to get in were 50 people deep at each departure level entrance...somebody posted that a good idea is to enter on the arrivals level -- my taxi drove down there and there was no line for entering.
3. Nice thing about the Thai lounge is the free internet wifi, just ask the lady for the password. The snacks were very average. Good selection of juices and colas though.
4. Normal business class configuration. When I booked I asked for a window seat but on the phone I was told they cannot book the seats ahead of time on the domestic routes, just have to ask at the airport. Nonetheless, I must have window seat in my Royal Orchid traveler preferences or something because I had one pre-assigned.
5. Service on the plane is nothing to get excited about. No alcohol. Soft drinks offered when you take your seat. A meal was served but it was some processed chicken meat to make it look like a drumstick. Nothing else, no dessert, etc. Also they did not offer anything to drink until everyone had long since finished eating. Never came around with coffee or tea, only the tray of soft drinks. At the end they give you a hot towel.
6. For once, it seemed that all the business class luggage came out first, so that was cool.
7. At Don Muang, just head up to the departures level and hop in a cab - faster and cheaper (no airport surcharge).
8. They did announce that if you are holding a Thai airways boarding ticket that you get a bus transfer to the new airport - not sure how that would work if you hold a boarding pass for another airline, or if they charge anything. It sounded free if you have the Thai boarding pass.
9. From touch down at Don Muang to Victory Monument -- 55 minutes. Not too bad.
10. I think I still prefer Nok Plus.
Cheers, Ro-baht

Flying BHH-HKT in business for the extra miles is not worth is. Distance is 416 miles, so you get 500 miles in economy (the minimum they give) and 5250 in business (125%). The advantage is no queing at check in, free drinks (non alcoholic) in the Royal Silk lounge, and bigger seat/more legroom in the plane. The 2040 flight HKT-BKK (TG224?) is 747 standard, as many people use this to transit to BKK for connecting international flight. As I am Gold Card member I allways get a first class seat. The new ones are fantastic, but on my last flight it was still the older version.
