This isn't about better deals. Its about being the first fare paying passengers to travel on a brand new aircraft. Much of the money generated through the ebay auction is going to charity, including 2 Sydney hospitals.
I guess its for those where a few hundred extra dollars isn't going to hurt them, and is going to a good cause.

Yes I know, but I was responding to comments about the high price by others. I only fly Qantas or Singapore myself, irregardless of the price.

I Think Ncha's right.

The engine is too big for an A340 but a test engine on another aircraft seems more likely. I saw the same on a 747 when they were testing the 777 engines
