airfare to LOS from USA
A few months ago a BM was ventting about the crazy airfare to LOS from Europe. Now I see the U.S is in the same boat. I just tried to book Thai's direct flight from JFK to Phuket via BKK for mid-February and the price was over $1,500. How crazy is that, the sad part is, I'm not even flying premium class. I always take that route, from Boston to JFK to Phuket on Thai. OK, I'm much better now, some serious $$$ are in the forecast. Come to think, I have to fly from Boston the previous day and stay overnight.

Just checked Thai Airways from JFK to BKK in February 08. Premium Economy $1576. From there an Economy to Phuket is less than $200. So for a total of $200 more you could fly Premium Economy with Thai. IMO more than worth it.
Also did a search on Cheap Flights, Airline Tickets, Cheap Airfare & Discount Travel Deals - Kayak.com and with a change in planes tickets are available for $1170 with Delta (Korean) via Seoul.
Either way, this far in advance is generally not the time for special deals.

thanks for the input, I just did a few date search on Kayak and it looks pretty good. One thing I hate is that multiple stops and change of plane deals. I'm going to wait about 5 weeks or so to see if any deals come around.

Trying to figure out when the best fares are available is a game of roulette; however, I would think the best odds are after Christmas.
If you purchase a Premium Economy over the phone it is refundable. If you purchase on-line there is a $200 cancellation fee. At least that's how it was last time I flew Thai Airways (Feb 07). Also do not expect the Premium Economy tickets to go on sale.

Great thread. Having just returned, flying back is very much on my mind now. I took United this past trip for extra leg room on economy plus. I will have to check out the other carriers to see what they have to offer for flights and leg room. Leg room is important to me. I was bummed out United changed my chosen in advance aisle seat from Chicago to Tokyo so I would love to use another carrier if things allowed.

I would totally agree with that.
Someone asked me in PM to compare business with premium economy. The seats in PE (Thai Airways) is a bit wider than economy, the amount of leg room is 8 inches more and the recline is 135º. The food service is also a bit better (as far as I remember the appetizer and desert was the same as business) and it is served in china, rather than plastic.
I am pretty seasoned in all classes of service, but strictly from a value point of view, nothing beats PE. From JFK to BKK the average premium in price is about $10 per hour. On my last trip of 17 hours I slept about 13, meaning that I was 100% ready for action upon arrival.

This is the answer to what I was just thinking. I have flown Thai economy from Shanghai to BKK before and my knees were jammed into the seat in front of me. Knowing that it is 8 inches more makes me want to try out Thai PE from JFK.
Also looks like Thai flight is shorter than United and gets you into BKK around 4pm or so where United is after 11pm(at least the flights I was just looking at).
Thanks for the info. Now I just need to find a time to return. Probably sometime between March-May.
Can't wait to start the count down.

Thai flight is only one that is direct to BKK

That's is because Thai is non-stop. United may advertise direct, however, direct only means same flight number going through.

Northwest may be the exception. From 3 (or 4) US ports only 1.5 hours in Tokyo ... still I would not be thrilled with NWA even though I have found their international service to be much better than their mediocre domestic service.
I now live near Detroit and can get to BKK faster with NWA that any other airline.

Detroit! I thought you just built a fancy house on a nice spread in the country outside of Philly.
What area of Detroit are you in? I lived in Michigan and used to go there often. Met my ex there, she's from Birmingham.

Seems that the pilots are even worse than the planes.

Connecticut, Pennsylvania, same, same!
Ann Arbor is my old stompin' grounds. Nice town! Had many a great night out there. I used to live down the road a piece, in Ypsi, about a half block from the EMU campus!

I flew NWA once and the good thing is they will offer 1st class for 400usd right at the gate if they have seats available, which is a really good deal

It looks like I will stay with my usual routine with Thai. I've done the direct fly now 4 times. To me it works great, I'm at C&N at a reasonable time, go for a quick shower follow by an oil massage. A quick meal at Mr Goods and Bangla hear I come.

Very good chance I will go with Thai on my next trip also. Checked out the rates for late winter early spring and they look good for PE.
Does anyone have any idea how fast PE is sold out? I am trying to determine how far in advance I need to book my ticket. To get PE seats, is booking trough Thai directly the only way or are there other discount web sites that also sell PE seats? I have so many questions! lol
Lots of great info here for me..thanks to all!

I have never seen PE prices vary, but a few dollars, so if you are keen on that book early. Call Thai to confirm that they are refundable, if that is the reason for waiting with the decision. Many 3rd party sites does not have the capability of booking PE.
BTW. Thai has a promo that if you fly 25,000 miles in the first year of being a Thai FF you get silver status for that and the next year. PE gives you 110% credit so a RT from NY to BKK, plus a RT to Phuket should do it. IIRC that's what I did last time.

Just booked with Thai for April PE class direct from JFK to BKK...thanks for the info guys!
I actually had to end up calling Thai to book because for some reason I could not get the correct flights to appear while online booking. I tried many times, but different flights would appear(different from what i saw on the website schedule). I sent the email this weekend and was responded that there was nothing wrong with the website. Tried again today before I called and booked over the phone. Was afraid flights were already sold out for April, but I guess there is still plenty of room.
Bring on April!

Hey, just noticed that too Massmoose. The fly format has changed. They got some weird fly connection in there. Coming to LOS is no problem, but leaving is another story. They have one leaving Phuket in early afternoon for JFK the next morning. That's crazy. Hopefully when I'm ready to book the one around 9pm will be available.
