I have never used Expedia for rooms, however, if this is a concern of your here are two suggestions:
After booking the room contact the hotel directly and confirm the reservation and payment.
Should you be faced with having to pay a again, keep all the documentation and claim a refund with Expedia.
Personally, I would book the room, if possible, directly with the hotel

I have had a flight issue with Expedia. It's well documented here, but suffice to say I wouldn't ever use them again.

I've used them for hotels when in LOS for long weekend trip to nearby countries. Thus far, no problem. In total that's about 3 times.

Have not used Expedia for Patong, but Asiarooms.com has worked well for me in BKK and once in Patong.

Have read some really bad comments and reviews on travels forums bout expedia from travellers who didnt get what they paid for.
I did a search on expedia for some flight+hotel deals and some are really good.
Dont know if i will use them or not.
How bout Travelocity?
