I spend the first hour settling in....the next 14 hrs trying not to think about how good a cigarette would be.

Definately renew my membership in the mile high club. Eat, sleep, read, movies, games. And for some reason, I find myself watching the plane inch across the screen. Is addicting at times. Last nights flight from Tokyo to Minneapolis we had a 180 MPH tailwind, and our ground speed in a 747 was 758 MPH. We were so early that they pulled me to the side and searched my bags twice. The ten an a half hour flight was easy compared to my two and a half going through customs.

Funny... no-ones mentioned what I enjoy the most about flying - looking out the window down on the planet ... love to look down at the great cities - even at night. Flying over the Himalaya's, Everest, K2 (yes I've seen it - never likely to actually climb it am I !!), the Ganges and Irrawaddy delta's and Greenland's icecap - stunning stuff.
Even on flights over the ocean can spot little islands or boat trails - then there's the sunrise/sets and sometimes amazing storms - all good to pass the time and appreciate the wonderous planet we inhabit.

Hey landlubber. Boats don't leave a trail. Speak of wake or backwater. Don't ever try to follow ship's "trail" on one of your runs.
By the way, I take a sleeping pill and I am off for the whole flight.

I 'd get a window seat, read all the in-flight magazines, eat (slowly), try to fall asleep while watching a movie or listen to my ipod, and yes, I also love to look at the world going by beneath me.
Hope there's nu drunk fcuk or little kids in the area of where I'm sitting.
On my first flight to BKK I had this guy behind who got pretty drunk halfway through the flight. As I was trying to get some sleep, this guy was singing along out loud with the music he was listening to and tapping the beat on my seat (he was NOT a talented singer). Told him a few times to stop it(which always worked for about 20 minutes). Eventually he (at last) fell a sleep about 1 hour away from BKK. By that time i was too tired and stressed I couldn't sleep anymore.
Guess who was soo vast asleep it took 2 flight attendants to wake him up...
I always get the impression that time goes faster on the flight going to LOS, than the flight back home, although the actual flight time is almost the same.

I have a pair similar to your's, and always use them when on a plane. They sure cut out the excess noise, and can be used on any airline.
I also tend to only travel on those airlines like Singapore Air, which have their own entertainment system. As for me, I can only sleep on a plane if I'm coming straight off night shift and traveling the following day.
I hate it when you are on a plane (Thai Air or Qantas), and they have the one big screen in the cabin, and play 1 or 2 movies for the entire flight. I'm glad that most of these airlines are updating and making the entertainment system as a standard feature.

Thai Air has the personal entertainment system on their new Airbus 340-500 and 340-600 fleet.
But they fly many destinations with their old 747, where you are just having a public "big" screen like you mentioned...

Well, I've got a drinking problem in that I've got to run to the bathroom every other second after having a couple of drinks so for me it's the golden rule of travelling by air: --> Get an aisle seat

What's a long flight. AUS - USA and AUS - EUO
I have only done a few long flights and hated every second. Now I only travel to Asia including Thailand. I use 8 Hours up with booze, food, movies and sleep.

Used to be Drugs (Valium ) and Beer. But I quit that 5 years ago and we have to watch after the kids while travelling. Reading, eating and trying to entertain the kids. It´s bad if you can´t sleep;it´s worse if the kids can´t !!!
In some ways I´m lucky not earning enough for a yearly holiday in Thailand, but France and Italy are only a 6 hours drive from my home to the beach .
