Smile Airfare Price Reduction - - After Booking

About a week ago I booked a ticket from Detroit to Bangkok on Delta (code-share). The price was 1,300 and some odd dollars. Not a bad fare, especially since adjacent dates cost a lot more, however, I had seen it cheaper a few days before. Looked like the fares were moving up fast.

Today I was curious to see how much it had gone up and checked again. Turned out that the fare had gone down by nearly $400. I called Delta and complained. Without question my fare was reduced, except that I had to pay a $100 reissue fee, so nearly $300 credit.

The moral of the story is that it may pay to continuously monitor the fare for your itinerary and call if it has gone down by a noticeable amount.

BTW, I will be writing Delta to dispute the $100 fee, however, I doubt I will get anywhere with that ... even though I have flown nearly 3 million miles with that airline.

I think you are lucky you got a refund, what will happen if the price increases they could ask you to pay more.

I have to agree with TL on this one, if the price went up and they rang you asking for $400 more you would soon be p1ssed.....i'd just accept the fact you saved $300 rather than argue over $100....you can't have it all ways mate !!!

I agree with the boys above.
You've done well.....at the end of the day you're $300 up......and you can buy a lot in LOS with $300.

The only luck was that I looked up the new fare.
I was told that it is policy to give the refund, less the reissue fee.
I was also told that it used to be policy to give a complete refund of the difference.
As for paying extra if the fare went up, that will surely be applicable if I requested any reissue for any reason.

I do agree that the chance getting any more is slime and none.

Since you flew about 3 million miles with them, they might give you a break. If it was me, I'll take the savings and move on.

I am surprised that most posts so far semi-defended the airlines.
Besides my little rant, the main point was that this may be a way that some BM's who got "stuck" with higher than anticipated fares can possibly recover a few bucks.

There is another way of looking at this: If you book a ticket with a small change penalty and you choose to exercise that option for a completely different ticket of a much lower fare, wouldn't you want the difference between the original fare, less penalty, refunded; ... so why not on the same type of transaction for the same routing and times.

Dodger, I too believe that if you don't ask you will never even get a "no".
