Temporary Mobile Phone in Thailand?

When I last traveled to LOS, my Telstra mobile phone was next to useless for calling local Thai friends.

I also found my friend couldn't send messages to foreign numbers.

My Telstra phone is OK to keep in touch with people back home.

What I need is a temporary mobile phone for use within Thailand for about a month.

In Australia you can buy a pre charged mobile phone very cheaply.
Don't need anything fancy, just SMS with the occasional call.

Does anyone know the options and who to go to in Thailand for no account type pre charged phones?

Cool

On my last 2 visits, I have just purchased a One2Go SIM card and used that, most of the numbers I need are on in my phone memory as well as my Singapore SIM card, which saves having to get another phone. I think it cost me 300baht which included 100baht credit.

You just need to buy a DTAC or AIS pay as you go Sim card from one of the phone shops in Patong. Find out if your phone has been unlocked. If not you can buy a cheap 2nd hand phone in Patong good enough for sms and making calls whilst here. You top up your credit by buying scratch cards from any convenience store 50,100,150,300,500 Baht cards

3 baht for local sms, 5 for Int depending which promotion you choose, a 300 baht card should last you a fair while

p.s I think AIS 1-2-call is better for Phuket

Usually I bring 2 mobiles. One older one which is simlocked on my provider and my present one which is unlocked. I just place my 1-2-Call card in and put my Vodafone card in the older one. Easy does it.

It sounds like prices can vary wildly.

I'll have to shop around.

I'm sure, like other things in LOS it might be a matter of shopping around.

PS: I received an SMS today from my very special friend, so it seems my communications needs might be sorted.
As long as we can contact each other when needed, the extra cost in calls might not add to much.

It's nice to know alternatives available if I do need to go for a local service though.
