I just reserved at the Valhalla for three nights 13th-15th January inclusive. The price seems reasonable (1300bt per night for the standrad room) and it's close to Bangla Road - though at the opposite end from the beach. I have never been to Phuket before. Did I make a good choice?

Ummmm.........errrr.........some would say yes others no......what's your number on the party animal scale? If you score a high number you made a great choice, if your more chilled.....it could be a bad choice. Lots of conflicting views on the hotel and easy to find reports/views if you use the search function

^ OK I'll have a look for them. What would be a quieter option with a comparably good location and high season room rate?

Have a look in this thread and look out for reports on
Poppa Palace
Safari Beach Hotel
Salathai
Jintana Patong Hotel
Expat Hotel
All have websites (Google them) and you can get room rates there.

My favourite is the Poppa Palace others will say the Summer Breeze - read the hotel reviews thread and don't cancel until you find an alternative

I'm with Caerphilly on this one. We stayed at Poppa this year, and we have booked for next April now as well. I like the fact it has a pool on site. I know a lot of BM's love Summer Breeze and I'm sure its a great place run by a great guy, but the on site pool does it for me.
Never stayed at Valhalla, but from the reports its a great venue if you're into parties big time. I love a good time, but also need to be able to get a bit of kip every now and then. I know a mate of mine, a BM on here, Calyid, has just stayed at Valhalla, maybe worth giving him a pm. I dont think he comes on here often, so you may wait a while for a reply though.
Wherever you guys end up, I'm sure you'll have a good time anyways.

Yes you've made a good choice; haven't stayed there myself but heard from others that have, that it's fine & in a good location.
For other hotels at that time of year you may be struggling!!!

Thanks for the advice guys. That massive hotel reviews thread is too big to trawl through. It's good to have a few selected recommendations!
@Dawsey
I decided against the Poppa Palace, Safari Beach Hotel, and Salathai as they are too expensive. I don't want to spend ~2000bt or more. I don't care about swimming pools etc. All I want is a decent room in a good location. I have sent an email request for room rates to the Expat Hotel and also at the Jintana Hotel which seems to be 1250bt per night for my dates in January. That seems very reasonable.
The Andaman Guest House, at 1200bt per night, also seems reasonable. The photos of the rooms look decent enough and the review on the hotels review thread seems positive.

Only stayed at Jintana myself from that list, but at the price, its perfectly adequate, clean ,quiet and comfortable. The pool is very nice too.

^ I might give that a try then. Perhaps I will stay my first two nights there and then spend my last night in the Valhalla just for the experience.

Graceland, NOT girl friendly, think, but do not quote me, it was 1k per night for any guest, cheaper to use a ST room at 500 bht.
Even cheaper still, look to relocate, its a great hotel, there is gate access to the beach, thought maybe could sneak a guest in through that route but.....my mate got caught, so maybe not so cool??

I believe most of the 4+ star hotel resorts are now charging joiner fees. I believe this is due to the amount of couples and families now coming to Phuket.
A huge influx of couples/families makes it easier for them to now charge a joiner fee as they don't really care about the single guys coming. They can always go and stay somewhere else.
Plenty of other places to stay that will give you more personal service, cheaper and closer to the nightlife if that's what you're after.
BM owned places too.....

I would say not gf ..I doubt if security would let a bg through the gate for a fist full of baht..been through there for a look, mostly familys and couples top end accommodation..I stay 200 mtrs away and walk past it on my way to the beach.

Graceland, NOT girl friendly
Graceland, NOT girl friendly, friend of mine stayed there last year and had trouble. Wanted 1K THB, but after that found a 500 THB Guest House each night, and then only used his Gracelands room to recover during the day.
