Could renting a Toyota Vigo in LOS end up being a false economy?

Hi BM's.

On my next LOS trip I plan to hire a vehicle.

My option is either a compact sedan or an open tray 2 x Door Toyota Vigo 2.5 J.

Being a pick up truck rates are 45% less than for the sedan.

Another advantage is fuel economy due to the diesel motor.

My worry is that I may not be able to store luggage safely, in the small area behind the seats inside the cab.

Has anyone had experience with this model and will there be room inside for luggage for two?

Although diesels use less fuel, will the larger capacity 2.5 litre motor and heavier chassis nullify any savings when compared to a 1.5 litre petrol compact?

Any feedback is welcome.

NB: Do thai passengers like riding outside in open tray vehicles? You see a lot of them riding around that way!

cheers

Rural Thai passengers will ride in an open truck but they would rather not..

I would imagine fuel economy on a 1.5l petrol sedan would be far better than the 2.5l diesel vigo..

Why limited to the 2 door.. 4 door king cab would tick a few boxes.

Red face

On my last vacation I rent a 4Runner up to 13 people inside at 1000Baht a day. This time IŽll go for the Fortuner , spacious enough for at least 10 people.1400 Baht/day. Despite road safety.....

Seriously,the Honda Jazz(1.5 compact)is a great little car,very economical,with a fantastic 7 speed transmission.

Although the rellies wont fit in it,but that would be my choice.

Hi CM,
I've rented the 2 x Door Toyota Vigo earlier this year, and there is room to put the bags in the back if you want to do that. But they will be in sight, so not sure how safe that makes you feel.

Maybe I can stick a blanket over the bags to keep from prying eyes.

Haven't made a final decision though.

For two weeks:

2 x Door Toyota Vigo = 13,937.80 baht
Honda Jazz = 17,989.48 baht

4,000baht difference???

My buddy rented a brand new (just out of the shrink wrap, 1000 kms or less) Jazz VTEC with full insurance for 700 (or maybe 800) baht per day.. I was shocked at how cheap. That was from one of the big names (budget etc) at the airport. Even if that is 800 thats still <14k.

If I was driving up country tho the vigo would appeal for the roads.

My figures were from the Budget site.

:: Budget Thailand ::

The biggest concern is getting internationally backed insurance.

An accident could send you bankrupt and in the clink for a spell.

Perhaps I'll be able to get a special like your friend did, with good insurance as provided by the major three.

My quote allows pick up from Patts.

Are the roads pretty dismal up north?

Would really like to secure better prices than those I've found as 17,989.48 baht is more than I paid for return airfare from Oz.

Come on CM, you can't factor that into the equation.
If it makes you feel any better, I'm paying 37,700b return from Syd.

The Jazz works out at $44aud a day, based on your figures.
Sounds like a good deal to me.

Thanks Easyrider

I'm going over for a month on my next trip and I'm anticipating many unexpected expenses.

I find if l plan ahead, and network it's surprising how much I can save.

Not tight, but need to make sure there'll be plenty available for entertainment.

When I flew in 2006 with my wife, I paid AUD$1,850.00, & this April past, it was AUD$1,090.00.

I've been able to score a great Jetstar special recently at AUD$602.00 (1,6098 baht) this time.

My income these days is low so I look for good value to make up the difference.

That's why I thought paying for car rental at more than airfare was hard to get my head around!!

If you know your dates well in advance, and do your homework you can end up saving thousands on transport and accommodation.

Sorry to hear your airfare was so high (AUD$1,407.00).
Who are you flying with?

CM, if you're budgeting for a month, I can understand you looking harder at the figures.

No need to feel sorry bout my airfares buddy.
I choose to fly with Singapore Airlines.
I could have got a cheaper flight with Jetstar, but I'm happy to pay more. (flyer miles, better entertainment, food, beer etc.)..This time I'm on the new 380 too.
It's $1,300aud for late January.
My figures were also based on 29thb to the Aud.

When are you planning on heading over?

I think you will find that nearly all the Toyota Vigos here have the 3 litre D4D engine in them which being the latest generation commonrail engine is actually more economical than the 2.5 litre model. I drive a Vigo 4x4 and get 8km/litre around town and 11km/litre on a run. Would think the Honda would do a lot better than this and with fuel now 30+ Baht a litre this could add up.

The 380 sounds awesome. Very imposing aircraft and an experience in itself.

I use XE.com - Universal Currency Converter I should be more scientific in my currency conversions.

I land in Bangkok 21 April in the evening, and miss the Water Festival. Although lots of fun, being doused by buckets of water every couple of metres got to me last year and drowned my mobile.

This year I'm taking a special lady up north so she can spend time with her kids and family. Thought I'd give her a break from the bar scene.

It'll be an adventure for me, exploring the thai interior and I' plan to investigate non commercial Buddhist retreats. My future goal is to become enlightened if that's possible.

Thanks Soup.

It's what I wanted to learn.

The Budget Website specifies the older 2.5 litre Vigo model.

The Honda 1.5 litre manual Jazz consumes 17 km/litre and 19.5 km/litre highway cycle.

According to your figures my fuel consumption will be less than half compared to the Vigo.

Might be 4,000 baht more to rent but the more I use it the cheaper my fuel bill.
