Patrs, I personally like Hua Hin, is a lot quiter than Phuket so do not expect full on night life and clubs as you get in Bangala.
The bar area is all in on area so if you do not like the one that you are in, just wander to the one next door.
If you are going on a long weekend make sure that you pre book accomodation as all the would be could be's from BKK make it down there at the weekends.
Most comfortable way to get there is by A/C taxi from the airport. The blue/white buses are a nightmare and not sure in the mini vans from Victory Monument are still running. taxi will cost you appx 2500 baht.
Personally it would probably be a good place to take a G/F with you and use the time to sus out the place for future solo visits.
There is some good quality cheaper accomodation there, and if you want some pointers PM me and will try and help you as best as I can.
I am sure you will enjoy your visit

I'm sure your taxi approximate is accurate and correct Greenwood. But just wondered why if it takes roughly 2 hours from central Bkk to Patts and about the same time from BKK to Hua Hin, Why is the taxi cost doubleish??
Or am I wrong about the timings? Feel sureish, it was about 2 hours when I drove there from Bkk and also sort of remember it being about 2 hours when I took a taxi to Patts and I know I paid 1200bht, then.
I liked Hua Hin, but would comment that generally the girls were/or seemed, a little sub par? bit more like we are used to in Kamala!!! perhaps why I liked it?

Dodger from the new airport apparently it is a longer ride. Last year I got one to the old airport and cost me just over 2000, so taking that it is farther out now, I am allowing for extra costs.
I went in the mini bus and from Vic Monument last time and that took about 2.5 hrs,but allowing for traffic is normally a 3hour ride. Journey is about 250kms from Bangkok.
If you are on a tight budget you can normally negotiate a good rate back to the airport with one of the many local taxi drivers in Hua Hin
All in all i like Hua Hin, is still plenty to do, has some great golf courses, just a more laid back type of holiday.

Choose well, its a bloody boring place to be stuck with someone who starts to get on your nerves. If you are into waterfalls and golf, you might like it. Good restaurant opposite the Hilton.
And the girls.....rubbish....but hey, YMMV. Theres even a Lolitas, nice decor upstairs but once again, the girls, if you can call them that...I was disapointed.
Lots of off their heads TGs in the karaoke places next to the Hilton after the Beer Bars close...thats another nightmare. Tell us what it was like, It may have changed or maybe I just pulled a crap hand.

Actually, I've decided to go solo. Flying from HKT to BKK and using Mr. Toom service to go down to Hua Hin. On the way back, I'll either take the train or do the bus or minivan route. Hope the BG there are at least bangable, if not I will be sleeping along.

can take a train too if you like them.....takes a bit longer (about 4-5 hrs from memory) but I enjoyed the trip
Hilton has a good nightclub with plenty of freelancers of better quality than found in the bars IMHO

And it's a convenient arrival port.
The train station at Hua Hin is only a "sand wedge" away, from the first tee box at Royal Hua Hin golf Club. 55555
