my girlfriend and i stayed there for 2 weeks back in october 07 and thought it was a great hotel besides the fact it was not in the heart of patong but only 5 min drive so not to bad, could not fault the place, great staff and great rooms, really nice pool if your into swimming

also has a free shuttle from hotel to bangla road and back every half hour until 9pm which saved on the ride in at nights

I spent two weeks at Sunset beach resort with my family last february. We liked it a lot. We had junior suites. Great relaxing place for a family holiday. Tuk-tuk from bangla 150-200 baht. Breakfast was great. Nice staff and service. I would certainly go there again if traveling with family.

The only downside is the beach in front of the hotel. It looks ok during high tide but low tide reveals all the rocks. You have to go elsewhere if you want to swim.

It really breaks down to do you want to stay in Patong, which is far livelier at night, or Karon, which has a little nightlife but not on the scale of Patong.

Karon Beach is far better, and Kata Noi is close which is also a great spot.
But from Patong, Surin Beach and Laem Sing to the north are equally good.

If you stay in Karon and find the nightlife too quiet for you, better add 500-600baht per return trip to Patong every time you go.

Sorry, I have no experiences of either hotel.

Have stayed at Sunset Beach with the wife and liked it ...but it is not within walking distance of Patong central..beach looks nice but you cannot swim there due to the rocks.

Have stayed in Karon but not at your hotel. Reading about it and looking at the location I would stay there if I wanted easy access to a clean beach.

Your hotel in Karon gets pretty good reviews on Trip advisor (so does Sunset Beach)
Karon Sea Sands Resort (Phuket, Thailand) - Resort Reviews - TripAdvisor

Location wise the Karon hotel seems better for walking access to restaurants, shops and a small number of bars. For a relaxed holiday with my wife I'd take the Karon option - I would not recommned either hotel for single guy(s) looking to party.

Taxi costs are a factor but the difference is 100 ($A4) to 200 ($A8) baht round trip to Patong as both hotels are away from the central Patong area. (Sunset beach has a free shuttle on the half hour but you'll get sick of waiting around for it.) Enjoy.

why not split and spend half time at sunset beach and the second half in karon ?

i spent several times at sunset beach, i like it very much for the first 2-3 days, since some part of the pool gives me shadow, which helps me to get the tan necessary for the rest of my holiday.

the rooms are very good for the price. down from the hotel at the bend there is a small sandy beach with fishermen boats, where you can relax and swim, but is nothing compared with the beaches in karon, kata or more far away.

by walking you need 30 minutes to go to the center of patong. so it will be better to rent a motorbike, but be careful driving in the night because of traffic. so your day may be spend the morning at the hotel and nearby beach, and go to patong in the late afternoon for shopping and fun.

karon has the longest beach in the southern part of phuket, but you will have to walk a long way to shopping and local restaurants. but it is a good place for relaxing and the beach szene. personally i prefer kata beach (north or south part). best again to rent a motorbike for the easy going around.
