I believe most of the low cost airlines fly out from Don Mueang.
I'm not sure about Air Asia though.
I just booked a flight to Phuket with Nok Air and all their flights are out of the old airport.

Thai Airways uses both airports, I flied to the new one in November and then I used Don Muang in December for the wedding party.
If you are going to BKK I think the old one is better, less traffic into bkk. When I used the new airport it was horrible traffic to get into town.

You can get your flight from Suvarnabhumi airport, no need to go to Don Muang at all.
Journey between the two is at least 1 hour and very dependant on current traffic conditions.

Thai have flights from the new and old airport.
They time the ones from Suwarnabhumi to coincide with major international arrivals. the rest go from Don Muang.

Just to be sure, check the airport designator on your tickets.
The new airport (Suvarnabhumi), is designated as "BKK".
The old airport (Don Mueng), is designated a "DMK".
As all international arrivals utilize BKK, you should show a flight from BKK/HKT...to avoid having to transfer airports.
(about 1/2 of Thai Airways flights operate from BKK, the other 1/2 from DMK)

I once had to do the dash from the old airport to the new one via taxi and was quite surprised that it only took around 45 minutes but I may have gotten lucky that day . It's always handy to not have to switch though .

On my way back to farangland I'll have to swith between the 2 airports but I have 4 hours between my flight from HKT lands and my other flight takes off at Suwarnabhumi so more than enough time.
