My wife's family lives in BKK but always takes the bus up to Nong Khai. And from Nong Khai you can walk across the Freedom Bridge and take a taxi to Vientiene. Not very expensive. But I recommend you to take care of the visa while in BKK, otherwise you must use around 1-2 hours.
